Daisy Wheel Cleaning
JSlot
Posts: 1,218
I know this was covered not to long ago, but I'll pass my results along anyway. After 5 years of no cleaning at all, my daisy wheel had gotten to the point that I had to beat it open with the ash tool when I was ready to open it up. 30 minutes inside the Egg @ ~700° and it is now fresh as a, well, fresh as a daisy! Spins freely and all. Way cool after being way hot![p]Jim

JSlot,
What did it do to the handle? Did it stain?[p]Kip

JSlot, I can't get my daisy wheel off the top of my Egg. I've tried my darndest to pull it straight off and it won't budge. I'm worried that if I try to pry it off, I might crack the chimney of the Egg.
If I can ever get it off, I'll be sure to try your cleaning method! Mac

Mac in NC,
You might try getting wheel as hot as you can in place (I guess just open the slider part) for a good long cook, and then after it cools, try some light taps from the side to see if whatever is sticking burned up. Maybe the taps will break it loose.[p]TNW

Kip,[p]My poor daisy wheel does not have a handle. That was added to later models.
-
Mac in NC,[p]I agree with TNW. You should be able to remove it with little or no problem once it is hot.

JSlot,I find that simply scraping the rim and elsewhere on the daisy wheel with a flat head screw driver does the trick very nicely without wasting any lump whatsoever. Keep it simple. No need to dance.[p]
-
ThunderThud,[p]Heck, I look for excuses to light lump, food or no.

JSlot,
Make sure you use a hotpad or some kind of hand protection when you grab that really hot daisy wheel. Don't even bother to ask how I know!

JSlot, the time in the fire does in fact do the trick, but after I went that route I found rust was a resulting problem due to burning off the paint. Thereafter I took it apart and repainted it in total with high temp BBQ paint. Three times thereafter when the cresote build up gets really gross I have gone the ammonia in a small covered plastic pail route. An overnight soak and then a scrub under running water with a stiff brush will bring Miss Daisy back to looking like a spring chickie!

ThunderThud,[p]As bad as this was, scraping was futile. The goo just wouldn't come out from under the wheel. It's gone now!
