Butt Question. . .

I am cooking Butt for my Dad's B-day and I have a problem. My Mom purchased the meat and asked me to do them and I mistakingly thought I was only doing two when in reality I'm doing four. I had already fired my egg fired up and had two on when she informed me there were two more in my fridge. The only way I can do four and not have them be touching one another is to lay two on their side, which I have done. Is that going to be a problem?

    Washog,
I did three once and they were touching. Didn't seem to make any difference in cook time just didn't have "bark" where they were touching, still an 18 hour cook. One guy here did four as I recall he posted a picture of three on the bottom and the fourth one on top of them.
Good luck and happy b'day to your Dad.

Washog,[p]I know this may be late but here it goes. You can put two on top, like on the right, and two on the bottom, like on the left. If you don't have a grid extender you can do the same thing with an extra grid and fire bricks on their side to support it. Good luck with your cook.[p]Chuck <><

  • Chuck,
2 large eggs? Wow, I am jealous... those puppies can pump out some SERIOUS cooking poundage. What is your max lbs capacity (roughly) on pork butts or briskets?

Joel Ferman,[p]The cook in the first photo was 5-7lb butts and a 14lb brisket. I think I could get 4 butts at 7 or 8 pounds on each egg or up to 64 lbs of butt on two eggs. The pictured cook fed 70 people with leftovers. You could feed 50 people on one large egg cook if you pack it on. [p]Two large eggs are the way to go. Even my wife is glad I got the second one. I do either multiple items (meat and veggies) or multiple pizzas or quesadillas at a time or can cook some lunch when the butt or jerky is still on. I also have a mini and want to add a small when they get the hinge thing worked out.[p]Keep up the great photo posts, they are always fun to see.[p]Have a great night.[p]Chuck <><

Chuck, Another good lookin' pic! Is there any way to control the temp on the mini? I can't see a thermostat. Mac

Mac in NC ,[p]Thanks. Yes the mini comes with a thermometer also. It is either hidden in the reflection or I might have taken it out. I don't clip in my thermometers and have them spaced out so they don't stick in as far.[p]Have a great day.[p]Chuck <><[p]
