Has anyone tried to clean the DFMT? I gets real gunky over time. I tried using hot soapy water, but that didn't work. It still had a coating of tar under the daisy wheel.[p]Any suggestions?

PLD,[p]Open it wide up and open the bottom vent - that will max out around 650° -- perfect for doing pizza. 20 min at 650 will fix it up - or let it go 1 hr.[p]Tim

    PLD,
I haven't tried to clean mine, but if I were to do it, I'd use the same thing I use to clean my drip pan. It's a paste made by orange clean (not the spray), which I picked up at my grocery store (though they probably sell it on TV too). If you don't have anything like that around the house, I assume other cleaners meant to degrease should work. Perhaps oven cleaner? Let us know what works, should we ever need to clean ours.[p]Aron

PLD, I had the same problem when I first got my BGE. Now, whenever I shut dowm the Egg I put the Daisy-wheel inside on the grill. The remaining heat in the Egg seems to help keep the Daisy-wheel clean enough to keep from sticking. Also I think that it takes some time for the Daisy-wheel to "season" somewhat, like a cast iron skillet. After some use it developes the same non-stick surface like a skillet and doesn't seem to stick like when it was new.
  • PLD,
If you are looking for a cleaner, I'd try regular rubbing alcohol, it cuts tar.[p]My daisy whhel is clean, so I'm wondering hwere all the grease is coming from.[p]Mike in MN

  • Tim M,
I agree with Tim. I rarely ever get my egg over 300*. Usually I live in the 210* to 280* range for long slow cooking. I think the low temps are the main reason for the grease buildup. Wood may add to it, mine usually looks like it is ready to blow up from all the smoke! I have noticed when I heat it up for steaks (sometimes with fire shooting out the open stack) the heat melts away the tar and it works great. Placing it inside the grill when you are finished may help, but I would think the handle would get grimy, maybe not. [p]My suggestion is what I always do. Usually when I pull the top to close it down, the daisy wheel is stuck. I pull it loose (easier when hot) and make sure it spins freely along with the slider. Then store it. The next time you use it, it will still be free, never fails.

  • PLD,
I use Easy-Off oven cleaner on my daisy wheel. I spray it down good inside & out and let it set for a coulpe of hours. Hose it off and it's ready to go.[p]Terry
