Dehydrating Egged Food

Have any of you ever dehydrated your egged food to take backpacking? Since we always buy jerky to take, we thought this time we'd try our hand at egging some, but what about pulled pork, brisket, chicken, or seafood? It would be really awesome to be able to pull some excellent Q out of the pack and chow down after a long day of hiking...! Any tips or suggestions appreciated.[p]QBabe

I dehydrated a bunch of brisket for a backpacking trip. We made a killer pot of chili from it at 10,000 feet. Use some tenderquick for the jerky, and you should not have to dehydrate. When/where are you going? What outside temps do you expect? We brought a bunch of vac-sealed pulled pork, with sauce in it, but it was chilly enough outside, or we had snowbanks to bury it in. [p]The dehydrated brisket rehydrated nicely. Not tried chicken or seafood.[p]For what it's worth![p]Cheers

Hi Chris:[p]We're planning a short little weekend trip in late Feb, so max would be 3 days, 2 nights out. Probably some section of the Florida Trail, or possibly to some trails in Myakka River State Park or Torreya State Park. Both have extensive trails and sites only accessible by hiking or biking. Winter in Florida is the ONLY time do do any hiking 'cause the bugs and heat are WAY too bad most any other time of the year![p]Myakka River State Park:

http://www.dep.state.fl.us/parks/district1/torreya/index.asp[p]I doubt we'll have snowbanks, but depending on the temps, we might be able to get away with just carrying pulled pork in the pack (if it's anything like the last 2 days, the low here in Gatortown was 24° on Friday morning with highs not reaching past 45° and then on Saturday a low of 19°). So, we'll have to see. I'll try dehydrating some and see how it works out.[p]Egging in the woods with a campstove...it sure doesn't get any better than that![p]Sunday Afternoon Shiraz to you!

  • QBabe,
Going to Ginny Springs in Mid February. Winter in Florida is just fantastic!

Banker John,[p]Are you a diver...? Unless you're from around here, that's usually the draw. Ginny is just minutes from me. We go there often since it is so close. My hubby kayaks the Santa Fe regularly. It's a perennial favorite for camping near home, along with Blue and Poe, particularly in the winter. When will you be there? Are you taking an egg?[p]Tonia

  • QBabe,
I'm in Crystal River - not far. Going with a few buddies for paddle on the Sante Fe. No egg for the day trip.[p]Diver, yes. But prefer salt water spearfishing.[p]Banker John[p]
