Did any of you cypress table owners seal your table.

I didn't and I should have. The boards on the table top have twisted and are now very uneven. When I get motivated I'll be replacing the top. I'm sure many other have sealed them.

Hey Marc,I used spar urethane on my cypress eggmates. They are holding up great even though I leave that egg out in the weather :woohoo: I think I put on 5 or 6 coats, but not sure

I built my own table out of red oak - per Naked Whiz specs - and sealed it with Minwax Helmsmen Spar Urethane (6 coats with light sanding in between), has held up very well so far but I do anticipate needing to sand and reapply every few years to keep it looking good. I stained my table before applying the seal. I also built a storage box and sealed that with high gloss Epiphane's (you can buy at West Marine) which appears to be a higher quality product, spreads more easily and from what I gather from wooden boat enthusiasts it will withstand moisture and weather better. I'll probably use that next time I touch up but it is significantly more expensive than the Minwax stuff.

Doug,
Looks like you are grilling on the new deck. -
:woohoo: I wish :pinch: That's a pic of the old deck :( Maybe by springtime
-
I agree with Tom, above. I didn't put a finish on mine and I regret it :( . Food stains and dust from lump get all over the table top. Since I don't have a heated garage, I'll be refinishing my table next Spring when it warms up. Until then, it just continues to get worse looking.

I guess I will put that on my todo list for the spring too. Mine looks bad just from the summer months. Guess I will let it get weathered for a year before I seal.
-
in all seriousness, Marc, this is what the unsealed table looks like after sitting out for 9 years. It is at Green View Nursery here in Dunlap which was a BGE dealer for a while. Granted this has taken other forms of abuse, OTOH some people like the patina of weathered Cyprus.
-
I plan on doing it soon...This table is just 6-7 months old in this picture....you can see how fast the top fades to gray.
Its also not very well put together, you can see how a few boards are loose that I need to fix as well.
-
Here is the before and after on mine. About 6 or 7 years outside
-
Pat, Is that cypress? Looks like redwood. You did an outstanding job on that. Do you do fences? :woohoo:
-
My tables are redwood one with a corian top and the other with granite. Put three coats of marine varnish on the redwood and I'm pleased with it after a year. May give it a light sanding and put an additional coat on it every spring.
-
I stained my cypress table and put three coats of matte finish spar urethane on it. I need to put a couple more on next spring:
-
I've got a table for my small that's been sealed with 8 coats of Minwax Helmsmen Spar Urethane. It takes a beating all year long and still looks great. Our local weather has temperature extremes of 110+ in the summer and -30 in the winter. I couldn't image the table lasting long in those extremes.
-
LOL It was the stock BGE table. Only took me 6 years to learn I needed to take care of it :(
-
these tables look great, my problem is my table is only 3 weeks old and is showing mold in the wood (cypress) grain......what can i use to get that out before i seal it?
-
I am having the same mold problem and am also wondering what to use to get rid of the mold before I seal.
