My wife of 42 years has suddenly had a flash back to her childhood involving trips to St Louis nearly 50 years ago. It was there that she enjoyed some kind of tiny nut that was sort of olive green in color, pointed on both ends, but not much larger than a swollen piece of white rice. And no, they were not pistachios. I'd really like to surprise her with some, but I'm clueless what they are let alone their name. Anybody know?

  • Ron,

Perfect description, I know exactly what your wife is talking about.

For the life of me I can't think of the name of them.

That HAS to be them! I just can't confirm it with her as it is to be a surprise. Thank you! BTW we have a small, but supposedly well stocked Mexican grocery store here. Is that something that might be a common enough item that it would be carried? Last time I was there I witnessed two street thugs shoplifting and one gave me the look of death if I said anything...maybe I'll just order the nuts!

I've bought pumpkin seeds (pepitas) at both Kroger and Publix. Planter's and David's package them. Pumpkin seeds can come shelled or unshelled. The shelled ones are the green pepitas. I remember when Sear's had a nut and candy dept. at their stores. I'd buy a small bag (red and white striped) of Spanish peanuts, pistachios, or cashews every time I went to Sear's. Planter's used to have a few nut shops, too. One was in downtown Atlanta and another out in the Burbs. Great place to go on a cold winter's day when you're out Christmas shopping.
