Health Considerations of BGE Cooking

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
OK, I'm close to buying my first BGE. One of my last defense mechanisms keeps asking me, "hey, is that stuff good for you?" Some of the pictures of your results look phenomenal, but I wonder if meat cooked in a BGE has more or less fat/grease/cholesterol than meat prepared in an alternate fashion. It seems that everything else I love is bad for me (i.e., ice cream, beer, french fries, cheese, sour cream, etc.); will this be any different? Does anyone have any serious and reliable information on this? Thanks.

Bill-the-Grill,[p]All things cause cancer. Especially good food. That being said, I'm going on 5 years with the Egg as my friend, no make that love of my life, and I'm still here. There are a few around here who have been Egging for 20 or so years. In the words of Delbert McClinton, "If it kills me I don't mind, I'll be smilin' all the while I'm dyin'!"[p]Jim

    Bill-the-Grill,
...ice cream, beer, french fries, cheese, sour cream...
Bill, hate to break the news to you but I think most forum members consume all of the above along with a lot of other great food.
Seriously, it all depends on how you cook. Chicken is supposed to be healthy for you so long as you don't fry it. Well, chicken off the egg is very tasty and juicy. There are those that will say any beef is unhealthy for you so there's no curing that problem.
I guess the big question is do you cook on a grill now? The egg is no more unhealthy than any other grill...it just helps make better tasting food and is a pleasure to use.

  • JSlot,[p]Any chance you could post the name of the album that contains this lyric?[p]Thanks, Mike

It's off the album "I'm With You", Mike. The title track is a great tune, too! Here's a link where you can sample both tunes. Enjoy!!![p]Jim

Bill-the-Grill,[p]Everything in moderation. My wife is super diet conscious and she loves all of the food that I cook on the Egg. There are a few exceptions . . . big ol' rib eyes isn't something you'll want every night. Again, everything in moderation.

Bill-the-Grill,[p]That all depends on how you prepare and consume your food. For example, you can prepare a low fat pizza or a regular one. If you eat 2 slices of the low fat pizza vs. the entire regular pizza ..... you get the idea. [p]When I prepare ribs I may try to eat half a rack instead of the whole rack. Or when making pulled pork I will eat 2 sandwiches with moderate meat on the bread and so on. I could prepare a 2 lb steak, but that just wouldn't be healthy either. So its true that it depends on how you cook and consume your food. You are what you eat. Unless you are like my brother who can eat Taco Bell and Pizza Hut all week and look like a stick. LOL[p]If you are concerned about cancer and such then cooking over charcoal is better than gas because you can produce fewer polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) when cooking over charcoal.[p]I have a large and have been loving it for about a year and a half now. I plan on getting medium sometime over the next year. If you really like to grill and barbecue, then you'll love using the egg. As with anything there is a learning curve when using it. But it is very forgiving. I still remember my very first cook on it. Pork chops were the best I had ever had.[p]Hope that helps![p]John[p]

Yes.  I own a blue egg!  Call Atlanta if you don't believe me!
[I put this here so everyone knows when I put pictures up with a blue egg in it]

  • Jim:[p]Thanks a bunch for the info! I'm in hot persuit as we speak.[p]Mike

  • Bill-the-Grill,
The Egg is a cooker, not a dietician. It only cooks what you put in it.

  • Bill-the-Grill,
I think life is for living (key word is "living") and one can either worry themselves to death or enjoy life. Personally, I think driving in Houston traffic is more dangerous than eating a few ribeyes, or even pink chicken for that matter. There's no getting around the fact that we have to eat. That being said, why not eat well? In moderation, of course, but one person's "moderation" is another's gluttony. I heard today that an overweight person over the age of 40 can expect to live three years less than a normal weight person. I will take those odds if I don't have to eat the crap my healthy "normal" friends eat. Plus, there is the challenge of cooking well and entertaining one's self. The Egg does everything I need in life - challenges me, feeds me well and entertains me to no end. Yea BGE!!![p]Spring Chicken

Shelby, hey I just saw an article this weekend where once again beer was stated as being good for you. Those rumors about beer being bad for you were started by the widow of the guy who got hit by the proverbial beer truck - or Carrie Nation, I forget which.
