One nice thing about October is the start of the Stone Crab season running from now until May. Our local fish monger has them on sale for $15.99 a pound this week. What a delicacy!

  • do they kill the whole crab just to get that one claw?. .or do they throw them back in the water and they regenerate them?. ..always wondered why you can't eat the reast of the crab?. . ..those claws are good eating though!!!

BTW for the unknowing one claw is harvested from a grown crab as it will grow back a replacement. It is illegal to willfully kill a stone crab.

    This even makes them better.

    Crab, Stone, Sauce, Mustard

This is the sauce served at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami. To make an even easier sauce, just mix regular jarred brown mustard to taste into jarred mayonnaise.

    INGREDIENTS:
1 Tbs Colman's dry mustard, or to taste
    1 cup mayonnaise
    2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    1 tsp A-1 Sauce
1/4 cup heavy cream or milk
    Salt to taste

    Procedure:
1 Place the mustard in a small mixing bowl. Whisk in the mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, A-1 Sauce, cream and a pinch of salt. Mix until well blended and creamy. If you'd like a little more mustardy bite, whisk in about 1/2 teaspoon more dry mustard. Chill the sauce, covered, until serving. Makes about 1 cup.

i love those things, but lobster is 3.99 a pound right now. a few years ago in the bahamas (sandy point in the abacos) on a fishing trip we paid a hundred dollars to a fisherman to bring us back a pile of those, must have been a five gallon buckets worth.

Dixon's - this week $15.99 a pound. Typically the claws they sell run about 10 claws for 1.5# though sometimes you can get 12 at that weight. For Pat and I a nice meal of them consists of 5 claws each plus 2 colossal shrimp each ($9.99 a pound). For the rest of the meal we like cooked asparagus plus cold pineapple slices. If you don't like asparagus then spinach also seems to augment the crab taste.

BTW the claws are already cooked so I just steam them in a steamer for about 5 minutes. Hot butter with a touch of garlic powder to dip the crab meat is heaven! The shells are VERY hard so you'll need a hammer to break and shell crackers to finish. LOL - it's kind of a messy, working meal, but worth the money and effort that's for sure!

I love stone crab claws with a nice filet. A business associate sent me these monsters last year - the colossal size (quarter for size reference). If he's reading, I hope I have been an even better client this year. ;)

    WOW!!!
Those claws came off 3 crabs that I wouldn't want to go swimming with! BTW as hard as the shells are to break that I buy I have to wonder if you needed a diamond blade to saw those open? ;)

Those actually cracked as easily as king crab legs.

Stone claws are some of the best seafood. I try to get them every trip I make to South Florida.
  • Moore's Stone Crab on Long Boat Key is hard to beat. Hint: the last week or so of the season, they always feature all-you-can eat stone crab claws for $20.00 0 $25.00.

We would come across the occasionally when I was a yout gigging flounder and scrounging the occassional crab.

As I recall you only took one claw and put the crab back. This was in NC. Big brown crabs with huge claws that are related to these. We'd come across one for every 50 or so blue crabs.
