who suggested stuffing the turkey with cut up oranges and apples. It really added a special taste to the old bird. It was moist (as usual) but had just a hint of the orange taste to the meat nearest the cavity. The family raved.

    Wise One,
not sure about you, but I got that same idea from KellyKeef. Now while that takes care from the inside throw a peeled onion on the coals for the outside! Great additional flavor and smell to drive the neighbors up the wall!

Wise One,[p]How do you think this kind of thing would do with a chicken? I have one of those very fat chickys sitting here looking at me and thought something different would be nice. That is if AlexShark doesn't grab it and put it in his clay roaster first. I'll have to hide it.

  • Wise One,
I just got my BGE a couple of days ago, so I am no means eggspert...but...whenever I do a bird in the oven I always stuff the cavity with onion, apple and orange. Every once and a while I will shove some sprigs of rosemary in it for good measure, lift the skin (not remove)and place butter between the skin and the bird. The butter has some rosemary, thyme and lemon juice mixed in with it. I assume this will work equally as well in the egg. Happy eating!

    Wise One,
just one word of caution from experience this last turkey day - I filled my 22# bird with a cut up:
    large orange
    large white onion
    2 medium apples
That was too much and it was close to the same as stuffing the bird. It effected the cooking time and the thoroughness of the breast was not as good as I wanted - I'll revert to less next time for sure!

    Wise One,
I did the same thing as RRP. But I added 2 sticks of cinnemon and a pinch of whole cloves. The neighbers were calling about the aroma and had to see what I was cooking. (Happens almost weekly) (you know how it is )
must have been a sale on 22 pounders :)

  • RRP,
Did you microwave the apples and the onion first? If not, that might help with getting the bird done. I put one apple and one onion along with a stick of cinammon, rosemary and thyme in my 12 pound bird, and didn't have any problems getting it done. I microwaved them for several minutes before placing them in the bird.[p]TNW
