Disgruntlement Explained...

The first dozen or so cooks on my new Large have had mixed results. Mostly good, but I seemed to be overcooking things quite a bit, which I have rarely done in my long history with my Medium. I had heard or read or both several mentions of thermometer calibration, but assumed (oh, how I hate that word) that a brand new thermometer would be properly calibrated at the factory or the Mothership.
Unless the laws of physics have been suspended in Southwest Missouri, and the boiling point of water really is 145 degrees, my thermometer was off by almost 70 degrees.
Calibration complete. I am now gruntled.

I wish you many more happy grunts!

I think sea level it's 212. Watch your vidio, and read the instructions that came in the little box your thermo came in. to Cal..... boil a med. to lg. pan of water...when it boils...grab a glove to prevent steam hurt ing you place the tip ONLY in boiling water. Watch the needle... WHEREEVER it stops + or - 212 adjust with a small wrench to 212. For your elevation you might google to find the boiling point of water for your area. Miles out.

supposed to be humorous.
I bought a 'fest Egg. The thermometer didn't come in a box. -
The fog has cleared, I think. If you will follow my post I believe your mystery will clear up. Others will chime in when they wake up, But never the less shoot me your addy off line and I will mail you one Monday or mahaps someone can fax you the directions. Try the boiling water 212 method for now. Think sea level boiling water @ 212. Adjust for your elevation, higher altitude makes a diff. Ask around what temp does water at your altitude. It will make a diff. Water does not boil at 145. 145+70= 215, thus you therm needs to be adj.

Congratulations on attaining gruntlement. It's a good thing.

I am WELL aware that water does not boil at 145. That whole "laws of physics..." line in my post was a JOKE!
I have properly calibrated my thermometer. All is fine. -
Jeff, one other thing you'll want to do is check the calibration every few months. I find that the thermometers can get out of whack occasionally. I tend to check mine whenever I'm getting ready to do a long low and slow cook.
-
I believe that is a good plan. My 9 year old one has never been calibrated, but was spot on. However, a quick check costs nothing and could save the day.
-
At 1051 feet, correction is to 210.1 degrees. The 1.9 degree difference is impossible to read on these thermometers. Honestly, guys, read what I wrote. I got it. It's fixed. Some of what I wrote was intended to amuse not confuse, sorry.
-
Sorry I chimed in, you have been eggin lots longer than I have on your Med. I also have a lg. and med. The lg. 3 yrs. the med. 6-7 mo.
Jeff, I apologize for jumping in on your dilemma. I should not ( assume...I hate that word also ) have done that. I'am sure others will arrive with help soon. Miles out. -
Nothing to apologize for, no help needed, just sharing the fact that the thermometer, even on a brand new Egg, needs to be checked from time to time.
-
I got what you were saying, I was simply pointing out to Miles that there is a calculator here - no need to search one out as he implied.
My reply was to him, sorry if you took it the wrong way. -
Dude!!! You know what ass-u-me does!!!
-
Apologies.
-
Yeah, it worked great on me.
-
This is why I have all these expensive thermometers here. Even then I calibrated them.
I am sure water boils at 145 somewhere... -
ive got three bge temp gages, not one of them holds calibration for long, so keep an eye on it. teltru makes a much better rplacement therm if you get frustrated with the one you have, its what i use now.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

And, after you've zeroed it (nut adjustment is not calibration), toss it into the trash and get a Tel-Tru.
-
I just this morning ordered a TelTru to replace the 9 year old thermometer in my Medium. It seems to have always been fairly accurate, but for several years it "jumps" between 200 and 250, and then seems to work fairly smoothly throughout the rest of the range. I got the 5 inch TelTru and thought I would see how it works and whether I want to get one for the Large, too.

As replied to fishless, I've got one on order. If it is everything that everyone says it is, I'll get a second.

in a vacuum at just under 23 in/Hg

then that makes you a man of excellent taste, superior intellect, and possessed of a great sense of humor
- it's on my top 10 all time too  happy in the hut

Sorry...didn't read all the replies before blurting out my nonsense. I think you'll be very happy with the Tel-Tru - I've had mine for years with nary a problem and, frankly, their build quality is head and shoulders above the BGE units.
-
What's a Yoot?
-
My problem with the new one, besides not coming out of the box at least close, is the Centigrade scale. I realize BGE's going global, but that is just annoying.
