Grandpas Grub Surprise Package

We just returned from our favorite Mexican restaurant and found a package from non other than Grandpas Grub. I opened it and found a letter that says, and I quote:

"Day 1: Do Nothing."
"Day 2: Mash the bag."
"Day 3: Mash the bag."
"Day 4: Mash the bag."
"Day 5: Mash the bag."
"Day 6 Add to the bag: 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk. Mash the bag."
"Day 7: Mash the bag."
"Day 8: Mash the bag."
"Day 9: Mash the bag."
"Day 10: Do the following:" ..........

He had me going there for a minute. I thought for sure that by the time I reached the 10th day there would be a huge explosion with flour, sugar and milk all over the Coop and spreading out like the Glob on Star Trek. But then I read where these steps are necessary to make Amish Friendship Bread.

Note to file: Don't be so suspicious of my fellow Eggheads, especially those who walk the floor late at night and send gifts.

Does this mean I have to get started right away building my outdoor brick oven? Or can I cook it in the Big Green Egg?

If this works I promise to go down to the bus station and erase (or modify) what I wrote about you in the men's room. LOL.

Thanks Buddy. I'll definitely give it a try and let you know how it turns out.

I got the same surprise today. I can't wait 10 days to try it, so I have already mashed the bag 4 times and got the milk out of the fridge. At this pace I'll have it baked in time for breakfast!

Thanks a ton Kent - I look forward to it.

It can be cooked in the BGE. Just look at the 2006 Florida Cookbook.. :)
  • being new to this forum, I have to say the title of this thread gave me a little chuckle!!
  • The date on my bag is 10/17. But the letter says, "Day 1: Do nothing. This is the day your receive the batter. The bag is dated."

Is 10/17 considered "Day 1?" Or is today, 10/22 considered "Day 1?"

My instructions say Day 1 is the day I receive it.

    Now I'm confused.

I'll just bake it tomorrow and let you guys know how it turns out. I gotta go now, I have some more bag-mashing to do

Sure glad I didn't sent out instructions for a nuclear reactor, I would really have things messed up around the country. Mushroom clouds around the nation.

The date on the bag is Day 1. Today is the 22nd so day 6, that is if I am counting correctly.

"Day 1: Do Nothing." - 10/17 (date on the bag)
    "Day 2: Mash the bag."
    "Day 3: Mash the bag."
    "Day 4: Mash the bag."
    "Day 5: Mash the bag."
"Day 6 Add to the bag: 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk. Mash the bag."
    "Day 7: Mash the bag."
    "Day 8: Mash the bag."
    "Day 9: Mash the bag."
"Day 10: Do the following:" ..........

Tonight or tomorrow follow the add 1 cup: flower, sugar & milk.

For the mash, I just squeeze a couple of times and try to keep the mix together in the bottom of the bag.

I would suggest you put the gallon zip lock in a bowl of some kind in case you forget to let the expanding air out. It will smell yeasty so don't get concerned.

I wasn't sure if the package would make it through compression and decompression of the plane trip.

If it ends up the folks that received the package like the bread we will continue on sending some out.

There should be another package or to out there somewhere.

Fidel, don't cook it today or tomorrow you are at day 6.

    Grape Boy, check your post.
