For some reason my BGE temp drops from a steady 250 to about 170 constantly. I add new charcoal and open the vents but I can't get the temp back up. Any ideas?

    Bob,
How much lump are starting out with, too much is better then not enough. What size egg do you have??? I usually fill mine about half way in to the fire ring unless I'm doing a very long cook.[p]Is your fire box opening lined up with the vent??? I cooked a butt yesterday at about 225° for 13 1/2hr. in my large egg. Are you stirring your lump before lighting and making sure the fire grate holes are not plugged???[p]Good Luck,
New Bob, one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. ÖÖÖ Not so new after all. Heeeeeeeee

  • Bob,
I suspect that air is not getting through to your fire. As New Bob suggests make sure none of the vent holes are blocked. You might also want to clean out the area at the bottom of the egg that surrounds the firebox. Air coming in through the lower vent needs to circulate freely all the way around and then, of course, in through the firebox's vent holes.
