How many wood chips

First of all, thanks to all those that welcomed me to the forum this morning. Just did my first cooking. Simple beer butt chicken. It tasted great. Did'nt know how to act not having to check the egg nearly as much as my horizontal rig. The meat was great. However, I would have liked more hickory smoke flavor. When the fire first started I put a handful of soaked chips on the lump coals. I was cooking at 225 so most of them never lit because only a few coals burned. Is there a trick to this or maybe I didn't let the fire get started enough before I brought it to the 225 specs.

225 is pretty darn low temp for a beer butt - 325 to 350 is better. At those temps once you've stablized put your soaked chips on then and you'll achieve more smoke like you want. Good luck and welcome aboard!
