Indirect cooking on Small BGE

My brother-in-law has a new small BGE. How do you cook indirect on it? I gave him 6 firebricks and told him he needs another grill to go on top of them after setting them on bottom grill. Will this work on the small using same configuration as we would for ind. cook on the BGE using firebricks? Thanks, Ray

Babyray,[p]Good question. I have a Mini and I want to do a prime rib on it for turkey day (planning to cart the Mini over to the inlaws house, b/c didn't want to go through the hassel of carting over the Medium) but all the recipes I see call for an indirect cook. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to fit even one split firebrick on the grill grate of the Mini, so I'm not sure what I will do to set up an indirect cook, or if it is even recommended on the Mini. As for the small, I know people have done indirect cooks on the small, but I'm pretty sure you won't be able to use 6 firebricks. As long as you can fit two lengthwise standing up on their edge to produce a raised cooking level and one lying down flat to block the direct heat, I think you would be good to go. I will be interested to see what people have to say about this. Good luck.

Babyray,
BGE makes an eight-inch round ceramic baking dish that I use for indirect cooking on my Small BGE.
Hope this helps,

TRex,
What sized Prime Rib are you cooking on the Mini?

TRex,
I beleive I have seen where some people use just one firebrick, or an 8-inch round cake pan for indirect cooks on the mini.[p]~nikki

RhumAndJerk,[p]Probably just a 2 or 3 pounder I guess--whatever will fit. I've never done a prime rib before--any ideas on what size I could fit in the Mini? Aside from buying 8" pizza stones (which I've only found online), I'm not sure how I will do the indirect setup. By the way--I was too late to taste your Great Pumpkin at Eggtoberfest but heard it was great. Take care and thanks for the advice.

Babyray,
I cut some firebricks to fit a 8x8 square cake pan on top of them, and cut some to act as a support for the raise grid. I used the same configuration that TimM has pictured on his site (I don't have the URL handy, but it shouldn't be hard to find). The bricks lift the cooking grid just above the height of the drip pan. They had to be cut to that size...I used a radial-arm saw with an abrasive blade in it for a smooth edge, but it was a pain, next time I might try a chisel![/b]
