Care & Maintenance of Egg

Used my egg alot over the summer after purchasing it and then didnt use it for August/Sept. When I went to use it last month, I opened it and it was covered with moldy/fungus on everything. Is this common? Should extra cleaning steps be taken to prevent in future?[p]thanks

Lee Johnson,[p]What you describe is not uncommon for ceramic rigs unused for considerable lengths of time, especially in more humid climates.[p]Add a little fresh lump and do a "health" burn of 600* or so for at least an hour. When fully cooled down, rub the dome and innards down with a dry, stiff bristled, brush. This will solve your mold problem. Other than more frequent use, there is not much else you can do.[p]If you anticipate going long periods without cooking, fire up the Egg every couple of weeks and let it get up to at least 500*[p]K~G

  • KennyG,
We keep our mini egg as a decorative accent inside our dining room. (Of course it moves outside when in use.)
We never had a problem with mold even with long time between cooks. I tried to have it homed outside once,
but Victor the way it looks.

  • I've had my "clay" BGE for almost 20 years, and never any
mold as long as you use it, but firing it up is the best way to get rid of any mold.
As far as the New Jersey guy; I didn't know that they had
fire in that state. I thought that the smell was from the food warming on their roof tops.
AS far as accessories; who needs them when you have an egg.
