Woo 2 or Platesetter

If you could only get one, which would it be? Eventually, I will have both, but can only afford one at the moment. I have been doing perfectly well doing indirect cooks for the past 9 months with 2 grates and a drip pan for both of the eggs.

I know that most everyone uses the plate setter, but the Woo 2 seems to be able to do almost the same thing plus a whole lot more. Is my thinking correct on this?

Thanks,

  • I assume you are talking Large here.. I'd get the Platesetter and the Adjustable Rig with the Spider.

Wait that is exactly what I did get.. Times Three...

I say the plate setter, but it sounds like you have enough knowledge to do whatever you need with either.

Yes, I would be getting this for my large. If I am reading the descriptions properly, the adjustable rig gets higher in the dome than the Woo 2?

    Bacchus,
I am mostly wanting to know if the Woo 2 would give me more versatility than the plate setter while also allowing me to go indirect as well? Yes, I could probably accomplish most of what I want to do with either, but also want to get the most bang for my buck as I am kind of tapped at the moment.
  • IF I had to buy one and only one I would get the adjustable rig/Spider combination. The Woo 2 is an excellent addition it'd just that the adjustable rig lets you do so much more. Whatever you can do with the Woo 2 you can do with the adjustable rig. This is right from TJV's web site:

So, you’ve wandered around the site and just can’t make up your mind which set-up best fits your cooking style. Well, here are a couple key differences that may help you decide.

    * The main cooking grid height for the Woo2 is a smidge below the felt line. For the Adjustable Rig, it’s two inches above the felt line. For direct grilling purposes, both are an improvement over grilling at the fire ring. Some prefer the felt line, as it is a break point with the base and dome. Others prefer the higher dome location as it provides slightly better temperature control.
    * The Adjustable Rig offers more set up options for multi-level cooking. So if you plan to do big cooks, it’s a better choice.
    * The Adjustable Rig offers the slide out grid as a tiered option. With the Woo2, you can get a slide out set-up, but it’s not as clean a set-up. It’s grid-on-grid.
    * Both the Woo2 and Adjustable Rig are not difficult to use. The learning curve on each is quick.
    * Both offer options to go higher in the dome.
    * The Adjustable Rig has the greatest potential for grid surface, over 1000 square inches. Not sure what you’d do with all that space, but it’s worth mentioning.
    * The Spider works best with the Adjustable Rig, as they were designed together.
    * Since the Adjustable Rig’s main grid is above the felt line on a raised grid cook, it is easier to add wood chunks and chips to the lump.

Let it be said, you don’t need both the Adjustable Rig and Woo2, unless you have multiple eggs and want to play. If you are still in doubt on which one to order, then we recommend:

    1. If you plan on doing traditional grilling and barbequing on a small scale, the Woo2 is all you need. Maybe add the extender for a little diversity.
    2. If you are a grilling or barbequing enthusiast or plan on getting creative with your cooking, the Adjustable Rig and Spider are for you. The set-up is more versatile than the Woo2. Plus, the cost differential over the life of the equipment is minimal.

You talked me into it :woohoo: The Adjustable Rig has been ordered! 'Course so much for my original question as it cost just about as much as the Woo 2 and plate setter combined  Oh well, you only go around once :P

Celtic Wolf: Do you ever use the plate setter in conjunction w/ the Adjustable Rig? Or do you mean that both accessories are good to have for different set ups?

I probably should have asked this before I ordered it; but the adjustable rig does come with 2 grates doesn't it?
  • The adjustable rig comes with 1 set of crossbars and 1 oval grate. Additional crossbars and grates can be ordered. I would recommend also getting the 14 inch drip pan that sits on the spider as a heat deflector.

  • You can not use the plate setter with the adjustable rig. The rig sits on the fire ring like the plate setter does.
