Just put on a 6.5lb butt have it at 250- How long should I plan on cooking this? Should I mop, or tent in foil, or just leave it?
THanks!

probably about 10 hours give or take. usually about 1.5 to 2 hours per pound. I cook my butts at 250 as well. I cook them to about 195 internal temp and then wrap in heavy duty foil and put in cooler till ready to pull.

How long can I keep it in the cooler? I want to eat late- So Ill have about 5 hours between taking it off the grill and eating-

i have held multiple butts for 5 hours or more in a cooler many times before and the temp was still above 150 when i pulled. place a thick towel warmed in the dryer first under the butt and then cover and tuck around edges with a second warm towel and it should hold for that period of time if you put it strait in the cooler after pulling off egg

Thanks

A butt that size will fit easily in a Playmate style cooler. Prewarm your cooler by rinsing it out with hot water then drying it before putting the meat in it. I finished my last butt around 6AM the Saturday we played GSU. Tailgated around 11:30 and that butt was still HOT when I was pulling it.
