Safety Reminder

I feel compelled to do this, because tonight I was a) careless; b) lazy; and c) in a lot of pain.

Always wear your safety glasses when lighting your egg, especially with a MAPP torch or weed burner. The mini, in all its cute and tiny glory, is no exception to the rule.

Tonight I was in a hurry to get the mini lit for some quick Swamp Venom pork chops with some Maurice's sauce, but I digress. Instead of going to get my glasses in the garage where I left them I put the MAPP torch to the mini and got a nice pop almost immediately, a small piece of (thankfully) not yet burning lump got me directly in the left eye.

This caused absolutely excruciating pain getting it out, and I quite possibly have scratched the inside of my eyelid and/or the eyeball. I am in a good bit of pain and have halos around bright objects looking out my left eye. It hurts to blink and my eye is all red and irritated.

Kids, don't let this happen to you - wear your goggles. I've lit my eggs a few thousand times if I've lit them once, and to be honest, more often that not without glasses. That won't happen again. I am proof that is can happen to you.

  • Rod, sorry to hear that happened. I sincerely hope there was no damage.

Thank you for the reminder, lately I haven't been wearing any eye protection.

  • Glad is was not worse! I bought a torch and before I could get it out of the car, I was told to take it back. Wood house, wood deck, torch & alcohol do not mix. I got another egg prize.

Sorry to hear of your pain. I know I'm a stick in the mud, and even though I have a MAPP torch I specifically purchased for lighting my eggs I have only used it twice and didn't like the blow back. Trust me, I'll never be a weed burner guy either.

  • Rod,

In my line of work I have had lots of stuff in my eyes. Most times I have had it looked after but sometimes not.
Now my vision is failing and I would go back to those times in a heartbeat and do what I should have done at the time. Get her checked out Bud.

Furthermore I was 12 years old when I received my first eyeglasses. To this day I remember the sign on the wall that read Next to life itself, GOD's most precious gift was sight. I'm not taking this thread down a religious path, but already being almost deaf I protect my sight with a passion! I agree with the others - GO TO ER like NOW!

  • Excellent point, Rod. We all think "it won't happen" to us. Safety glasses these days are available everywhere, cheap, and much more comfortable than they used to be. They should be standard equipment in everyone's gear.

That being said, my degree is in occupational safety and health yet I often don't use them when starting up the egg. Shame on me! Seriously.

  • Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention....I've never thought about wearing eye protection while lighting any grill I've ever had, but I see now it is a necessary thing to do....i am sorry for accident that prompted your warning and hope your eye will be back to normal asap.

Hope you are doin better. And I hope you can read this. If you did scratch your eyelid or eyeball, after cleaning, keep the eyelid from blinking. Every time your body repairs it with new cells, blinking wipes them away, and could cause scarring. Get some gauze and and place over the lid and tape closed. It will alleviate some of the pain as well. My doctor made me keep mine taped for about three days. Sorry it happened. I hate to think that you may miss out on what a good looking guy like Max is.

Sorry about the eye Rod, 30+ years in manufacturing and the only time I ever wore glasses was during OSHA inspections. But every time I light the Egg, the glasses are in place, period. I've lost lots of shirts due to little burning embers but they are replaceable. -RP

    Yo Rod
I had the same thing a few years ago (right directly into the corner of my eye), when using a torch. Now, if I can't wear eye protection I make it a point to turn my head to the side and look at the ground. Much better to catch an ember off the side of yo face than in your eye.

Glad you didn't get it too bad. Sounds like you'll heal up good if you are still not having enough pain to go see a doc. Eyes heal quick.

BTW, those BGE firestarters with the sawdust and parafin....they work great and are a lot safer. And you can light it and walk away without your face over it.

    Stay safe bro!

sorry to hear it.... get to an eye doctor because if you scratch the cornea (and it sounds like you did) you can have vision loss. the cornea has more nerves in it per square inch than any other spot on the body. it takes a long time to heal. most pain i ever had. i would wake at night and the television was still on, and it stung for a year or two.

take care of it. you are very lucky it wasn't lit. my god. but i doan hafta tell you that.

    sorry again....

The only time I saw a picture of Giada with him, she looked like she was being held hostage.
  • Sure it wasn't both for the Eggtoberfest last year. :woohoo:

  • Just my $.02 but go to the ER. My rule has been don't mess around with my eyes ever since I scratched my cornea in college. The 3 quick shots of wiskey only worked for a while. Got to wear a bandage over my eye for a few days.

But go to the ER, they also put some kind of gel medicine on it, seemed to be an important part of the fix. Although the eye doc says there is a thin line I can't see, the eyes apparently compensate so I don't notice.

    Hope all is well.
  • Stike,

I seem to remember you and max talking about sausage and the like the other day. He is gorgeous though.
