Thanksgiving Turkey

edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
I am a new Egg user. I have done a few whole chickens but I have never done a large turkey. I need some help with a recipe, length of time and temp, wood or no wood ideas or anything else that may be of help. Really want to have a great bird on turkey day. Thanks

    Boomer,
A lot of people are going to brining their turkey and you probably get some feedback on this technique. I'm lazy and like little or no prep time on my cooking since I also have to do everything in the house, too. Personally, I just spray my turkey with Pam or the like, put it on the VTR, and plug in a digital thermometer. When it hits between 160 and 180 degrees, it should be done. I have also cooked it with and without a drip under it - no notable difference. I have used both hickory and apple chips - whatever your taste may be. For a 26 pound turkey, it took me about 4 hours. Be careful when cooking a turkey on the VTR so that the BGE thermometer doesn't stick in the bird and also be careful when smoking a large bird so that it doesn't plug up the chimney. Happy Cooking!

  • Boomer,
I have not done a turkey yet (don't know why not except too busy with pork and beef) but you may get some information to help think about the process from this site:
    www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/faq/toc.html
I assume you have already looked at the recipe section of the BGE site
http://biggreenegg.com/recipes/index.htm where there are 2 turkey recipes. Julie's recipe sounds very good, "VTR" is a vertical turkey roaster.
I, for one, (philistine that I am) like minimal smoke so you may want to decide your taste before doing one with wood added.[p] KK[p]

  • Sorry for the repetition. Our computer had a mind of its own today.
