First, I'd like to congratulate the most surprising team of the season. With wins the first two weeks over traditional powers Miami and USC, the best story of the year so far is the Vanderbilt Commodes.

For some reason the NFL decided to encroach on the holy day of obligation, Saturday. Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstache had to be smiling as his Steelers beat the Bills. Oklahoma crushed the Bengals though.

The most exciting finish occurred as BYU knocked off Washington by a single point.

Now I'm still not sure about these overtime rules. They say each team goes from the 25 and that's what Washington had to do, but BYU kicked their extra point from the 10 yard line. The longer kick was blocked and Ty Dillingham's team lost.

There weren't a lot of great matchups last week. The Big Ten vs Mid-American Conference Challenge did provide some interesting matchups. There were some fairly even contests between teams from the two leagues.

Among the Big Ten/MAC highlights were Ohio State's win over Ohio, the Michigan State Fighting Chippewas blowing out the Eastern Michigan University Clausens, and Wisconsin's win over long-time MAC power Marshall.

Apparently both leagues have expanded. Defending MAC champion and noted women's college Semen U was knocked off by new Big Ten member Georgia. Illinois and Purdue beat new MAC members Eastern Illinois and Northern Colorado respectively.

I was a bit surprised that the Big Ten expanded all the way to San Diego State. Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue are all lining up for a chance to play the MAC's newest member from South Bend.

Speaking of the Home of the Fighting Amish, I saw that former ND hockey coach Digger Phillips was at midfield banging a cowbell to the tune of "Don't Fear the Raper". I don't know why they were playing Nebraska's fight song.

As part of the national celebration of the 40th anniversary of the USC Song Girls, I'd like to salute the unforgettable Lola from the 1984 squad.

Lola was a tall one, more the lean muscular type. I was on the sideline for ABC covering the Southern Cal vs. Ohio State Rose Bowl that January. Lola smiled and took me by the hand. Then Lola let go, did a little pirouette, and the skirt flew up. I have no idea why a Song Girl would need to wear a cup.

After the game I saw Lola leave with my good friend Lee Corso. It was soon after that that Lee started wearing those frilly dresses under his Gameday blazer.

I concluded that it's a mixed up muddled up shook up world. Except for Lola.
