BBQ Galore files for banruptcy protection!

I went to BBQ Galore yesterday to get a bake stone to make a Mini Plate Setter. I also want to price a large. The store manager told me he couldn’t place any Big Green Egg orders because they had filed for Chapter 11.

This is a statement from the company CEO.

Chief Executive Jeffrey Sears said "the general collapse of the market from home sales" and the company's inability to obtain financing forced the Carlsbad, Calif.-based retailer of barbecue grills to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week.

Now I have to find another outlet to get my LG BGE.

Just as well - there are frequent posts on this board about the lousy service by BBQ Galore and the lack of eggcessories they carry let alone are even willing to order. Use the dealer locator feature and find yourself a reputable operation!

Thank you for the heads-up about BBQ G! Could you please post some details after you fabricate your plate setter? I just purchased a mini and have no idea about reshaping a pizza stone. Are you using a BGE stone or a thinner variety? BTW, I've got quite a collection of power tools and haven't lost any body parts to date! Thank you in advance!
  • Well dealsers should be easy to find on the mothership page.

Here is the brackets I made from PC slot covers.

This is a 9 inch pizza stone that was 2 for 11.00 at amazon.

I used a bench sandpaper sander to grind away enough to allow airflow. It works fine for me. I am looking for s hooks to replace the slot covers if I can find some longer s hooks.

  • emilluca,

You might look at some strap steel available at Home Depot or Lowes. You can bend the thinner strap by using a hammer on a hard surface.

I should be able to put something together for you. I'll email you with details and an AZ Eggfest update!
  • They filed for Chapter 11 protection in mid August. The same venture capital group (Ironbridge) also owns Barbeques Galore in Australia which is still afloat - but probably not for long.

It's a classic combination of too much acquisitional borrowing and not enough investment in the basics such as staff training. It might work in boom times but once the party's over, it's all over.

The sole distributor of BGE in Aus, Galore have recently slashed the price of BGEs by 30% in what appears to be a desperate attempt to shift their remaining stock. Sadly, those who buy them can look forward to no support whatsoever when it comes to warranty replacements or spare parts.

I called a few Phoenix stores and they are holding firm on their prices for remaining BGE stock.

Barbeques Galore Plans Sept. 10 Auction; Breakup Fee Approved

    By Christopher Scinta

Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Barbeques Galore Inc., the world's largest specialty retailer of barbecues and accessories, plans a Sept. 10 auction to sell its assets.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Maureen Tighe signed an order today approving rules for the auction and allowing the closely held company to pay a breakup fee to a lead bidder equal to 1.5 percent of the offer. Tighe will hold a hearing on Sept. 11 on approving the winning bid, according to court papers.

Barbeques Galore, based in Carlsbad, California, doesn't yet have a lead bidder, or so-called stalking horse. Bidders can make offers for inventory at the company's 65 stores and its warehouse, as well as for intellectual property and store leases, according to papers filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Woodland Hills, California.

Barbeques Galore filed under Chapter 11 on Aug. 15, listing assets and debt of $10 million to $50 million each, and said that it planned to sell the company or form ``a consensual liquidating plan'' with bank lenders. The plunge in home sales helped push the company into bankruptcy, Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Sears said at the time.

Barbeques Galore owes about $12.6 million on its revolving credit loan from Wells Fargo Retail Finance LLC and about $38 million to Ironbridge Capital Partners on unsecured debt.

The company's stores, concentrated in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada, have 400 employees. It sells its own brand, manufactured in China, alongside grills from Viking, Weber, Lynx and Twin Eagles.

The case is In re Barbeques Galore Inc., 08-16036, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California (Woodland Hills).
