Mini Plate Setter from steel plate?

What would be the downside if any from cutting a plate setter out of steel for the Mini. I could have a 3/8 plate steel setter plasma cut at our metal club much cheaper than cutting up a bake stone.

go to my site and look at the projects page. Scroll down. You need mass for a pizza. play around with tera cota saucers and a fire brick. I think I have less than $4 in what I have. :)

  • I made a steel plate for my large and use it for nearly everything except bread and pizza, the only caveat is I nearly always use the Adjustable rig and spider, this gives me a couple of different heights for the steel plate. It works very well and there is no problem with vagrant tastes.

I built one out of 3/8 plate for my small years ago. Other than being heavy, it works great. I bought a stainless steel pie pan for the drip pan. The shield on one leg is to protect the cable from my Guru or cable thermometer. Any chance you could get stainless, that would be really nice?

i cook in a cast iron pan without the taste of metal... the fire grate is metal...

if your fire is hot enough to cause the metal to off-gas , you have bigger problems

I had one made for my large, because I wanted to save my plate setter for baking pizza etc.

This is 1/4" stainless and works fine. I did not opt to put legs on it -- I just set the Woo ring on top of it.

I use it for indirect cooks, I don't the heat sink question comes into play unless you are baking.

Revently I bought a spider rig and the spider and a 14" aluminum pan (same source) works for both a drip pan and for indirect cooks.
