Hello to everyone i just purchased my egg a copule of days ago and have done bbribs. they were okay, a little dry, but great flavor. I am going to try steaks (ribeyes) tonight. I am a little scared of the flashback. I have read the nakedwiz's article on it so I think I know what to expect, I just want to know if how to open the egg after the burn off. Do I stand off to the side? if so, i am not sure i can open it, it is pretty heavy. any suggestions are greatly appreciated. and thanks in advance for the help!

Nope just stand in front with gloves on and burp 1 -2 " at a time. You will get the hang of it. And don't worry there will be a time that you forget and you will burn some arm hair  but we all have...
enjoy the Egg.... :cheer: -
If you are talking about how to open the Egg after the early heavy smoke clears, just open from the front. Flashback only happens above 500. I've had it happen a few times, and it was only when I had shut the air flow down a little with the temp above 500.
However, if you are up at searing temps, it is still good to "burp" the Egg by raising the dome a bit cause it lets some of the heat dissipate before you get the food into or out of the grate. An 800 degree open Egg is roaring even without a flashback. Have some good gloves on, long tongs, and work fast.
However, you might want to do a few more low temp cooks on your new Egg before going really hot. Sometimes the adhesive on new gaskets gives way under high heat. -
As with all surprises in life, the dreaded flashback happens when you least expect it (cause you aren't paying attention to how hot the fire is & how much air you cut off by shutting the bottom vent), so I always wear these (of course they don't help with the eyebrows  ):happy in the hut

Flashback occurs whenever temperatures are very high, as has already been said, and the air inside of the egg is starved for oxygen. If you can remember to do it, open up the bottom vent all the way, and open Miss Daisy all the way, and then burp the dome before you raise it all the way. This way, you'll provide the oxygen it wants slowly. We all forget, however.

When you get some time go the the Whiz' site and read the updated information on flashback's and burping.
