Did you buy BGE without tasting food off it first!

  • I just bought a LBGE and haven't picked it up yet...getting my cart ready first. Finally bought one because I have a couple coworkers that have been raving about it for the last few years. One has a bigger barrell type cooker for custom cooking jobs, but always does his family cooking on the egg. I looked for some time for a used egg thinking I could get started that way...you will starve to death looking...there aren't any! What does that tell you? I haven't ever tasted anything yet, but this forum and the nice people that contribute is almost worth the price of the egg!
  • Wow, you bought one and haven't used it yet? I know I won't have enough restraint to do that (just bought a Large and waiting to get it here today or tomorrow). :cheer:

Although I wasn't able to taste any food from one before buying this version, my Dad had one of the originals (from a friend of a friend) and I still remember the great turkeys he made with it.
  • I am one more that bought without tasting the food. My wife convinced me that it was the solution to rusting out grills in the Florida humidity. Litte did she know the monster she created. Love cooking on it and keep trying new things. :woohoo:

Someday I will learn to put these messages in the right order!
  • I agree.
Never ate off a BGE till I bought it, then tossed out the old grill.

  • I've paid for my first egg, to be delivered at Eggtoberfest.

Still waiting for that first taste, though the comments and photographs on this forum have me drooling.

Not that I haven't been known to drool anyway...

I bought my Large BGE off of a co workers recommendation and a lot of research, including a lot of reading on this site. Only one cook on it so far, but I know I am going to like it !!

i used the word "he" about twenty times referring to three or four people at the same time. hahaha

if you could tell who i was talking about, you did a good job decoding.

Skwerl_X was the dude here that used to taunt me with food pics. the dealer though, was a doosh. (crap-tastic=crappy)

  • i bought my first egg more because of the people i first met cooking on them and the atmosphere they projected around it (nature boy, woodoggies and mr. earl at new holland in 2002) . . .they were my kind of people, and after hanging around them for the weekend, i just knew i wanted to be part of their 'cult'. . .the rest as they say is 'history'....and its still as much about the people as it is about the food!!
  • "Blind buy" here as well.

Was in a BBQ Galore one day and overheard one of the salesman saying to another customer, that if you don't mind dealing with charcoal, the BGE made the best food out there.

Went home and did a web search, found the forum, the rest is history.

Had mine for years, and I'm still learning more about it. Very versatile, very good.

  • Unreal, no one tasting the deliciousity from the Egg before making the purchase!!! Well, include me in this group. Not only had I not ever sampled the great food, but I had not even heard of one until one day in late May '07 when a friend (in whom I placed a great deal of confidence) told me about the virtues of the Egg. Well, I am an impulse buyer, did not perform due-diligence, went home and ordered one on-line (no warranty). Ah well, have since purchased another large (demo, '07 Eggtoberfest)and two more from Flafest '08, gave one to each of my two daughters who use them extensively. Eggin' is a way of life.

...if i owned a company whose product was sold by word of mouth primarily, with the dealer being the primary point of information for prospective buyers, i'd probably send a guy or three around the country stopping in and asking questions like a prospective buyer.

i might even enlist some trusted users to do it for me. say, have them go around, ask about the egg as a prospective customer might, and relate their experiences. might help find weak dealers, and then allow the home office to either re-educate them or drop them.

but i'll say again, i have met four dealers in my area (my area, i'm not impugning every NE dealer), and not one of them knew a damn thing about the egg, beyong how much it was, and what came with it.

  • I had done quite a bit of research myself over the course of about 3 months. Had been working with an electric bullet type smoker and had had enough. I was up in the air between an Egg and a Traeger. Talked to everyone who cared to talk about it and read endlessly on the internet about it. I am a very thrifty person and care a whole lot about value. The Traeger was just too high for a flimsy grill. At least with the egg it was heavy as hell and i felt like I had got my moneys worth! :woohoo: Then my father in law called me on a Friday night and said he had found an outside garden place that was having a demo the next day. I was already convinced but the wife was not. After trying the pork and chicken the guy was smoking, she gave me the green light. That was 3 months ago and wee still love it.
  • AG,

    Yes,

I read about it somewhere and was convinced it would be great. Never been dissapointed. BTW, I have a bunch of new Wolf parts that were sent in error for my old range. There is a new griddle and cast iron grates If you are interested, there yours for the shipping.

I didn't taste first. I knew cooling with lump would be good. I bought it for the versatility of the egg.
  • I walked into BBQ Outiftters in Austin ready to drop
a couple g's on an offset stick burner. When I asked the salesman which setup would give the best pulled pork, ribs, brisket etc., his response was BGE. Not only did he save me a bunch of money, but because of his honesty, he has a customer for life. I was lucky
I had never heard of an egg before that day.

  • My brother in law had one for years down in Florida. I always thought it was just some kind of fad until...
while visiting last winter he cooked a turkey and fillets for the group. I commented on how that was the best food I had ever had and he is a fantastic chef. He told me "it isn't me it is the egg". I tried to dispute that statement but he stuck to it. Within a month from returning to South Dakota I had my own medium egg and a short time later was cooking as good or better then my brother in law. The rest is history.
  • Nope, never had a taste. I read online that the BGE was the bbq outdoor bbq equivalent of an Aga cooker for inside, so I started looking into it.

Found this forum pretty quickly and spent quite a bit of time here first. I also looked at Kamados and the Primo, but discarded both of them pretty quickly.

I think one of the things that subtly sold me was that a few years before I bought our Egg, we had a garage sale. A neighbor came wheeling this unusual 'bbq' over and said if we sold it, we could keep the money from it. She said her late husband made the best food off it. She suggested we ask $50. It was smaller than my large and it was a dark gray color. I had never seen anything like it. I was completely intrigued. I kept asking my husband, should we just keep this? Really had no idea at that time how to use it, what we'd do with it, etc. I did know it was a 'smoker' and I don't really care for smoked food. Or I didn't think I did. So we sold it for $35 and gave the money to the neighbor.

When I read about the BGE, I said, Aha, now I know that this is similar to that thing we sold at the garage sale!

Went ahead and got the egg and have never had a single regret.

Of course, now I am kicking myself on not keeping that garage sale cooker.

I doubt I would be as much of a BGE fan if it wasn't for this forum. I think the support and knowledge base here is phenomonal. This forum is truly what sold me and is what keeps me experimenting and discovering new amazing tasty foods.
  • Yup! After spending some time (months) lurking around this board I decided to buy a demo egg at a local "fest" . All of these mouth watering posts and everyone's photos how could you not have one for your very own? I love mine!
  • I have had an egg for a long long time. I had not tasted food from one.
I remember searching the web for a fan thermostat combination that would keep my pit at a constant temperature and got a hit and instructions on how to make just what I wanted but way to complicated for me. This guy was making it for some kind of a pit called a "Big Green Egg". Searched the net for it and found that they sell them in Houston at one of the pit places. Went with my wife and looked them over but thought they cost too much and did not buy one. That year, on Christmas morning, I found one under the tree. Now it looks like my wife wants to buy me a medium to keep my large company in its old age. Dang the luck!
  • I had a fraternity brother wh owned one. After visiting and hearing about how it cooked, I filed it away (that was about 56 years ago and we had a young child at the time) About 2 years ago, I stumbled across them again and started pricing.

I bought on his passion and not by tasting the food first.
  • Max,

Well said. Is the Mr. Earl you refer to Canadian?

The only thing my dealer in Shrewsbury, now defunct, knew about it was that there was some kind of cult following that had egg festivals all over the country he had never cooked on one but was eager to sell one. First cook was chicken leg quarters.
  • At the time I thought grilling was BBQ'ing. Over the many years I had bought many different gassers and smokers trying to get a good butt, ribs and chicken. I always liked those cooks and got complements with the results.

My next purchase was going to be an offset drum cooker and I wanted to build and Alton Brown flower pot electric plate cooker.

Indirectly, from a food consultant I was told there is and odd egg looking smoker which looked like an egg. I spend a day googling for smoker. Then finally googled for smoker + egg and finally added 'green'. One of the hits took me to the forum.

Spend a day reading all the past posts. The forum sold me on getting one.

I did bounce to other ceramic cookers and looked at their forums. The answer was an egg.

Clicked to the BGE home page, found 2 dealers. Called, one dealer didn't know much but made sure he let me knew he was on commission and to look him up if I decided to buy. Called the next dealer and he gave me some information. The dealer said the food was good and gave prices (retail + some) for the eggs.

Told my wife it was expensive I asked my wife to go look at them and get a large if she like what it looked like.

$1,100 later (for the same setup offered at the fests) and she came home with a large in the back of the Jeep. The end... well almost.

We I bought 3 more for the two of us. I have recommended the egg to all and have sold 11 eggs for the dealer.

  • nope, its hillard from philly, pa . . .our teammate on free range bbq. .. .we gonna see you down in atlanta this year??
  • Like so many others I had not had a taste of anything from a BGE. I also did not know of this forum until after my joining the "cult".

It was one of the best decisions I have made. (Marrying my wife was the best one [45 years])
