I got my BGE and long table today and was wondering about the finish on yours. You said you used Minwax stain and 3 coats of spar urethane, was it oil or water based and did you lightly sand after each coat. I am getting anxious to get the BGE fired up. Thanks to all for all the help you have given this 'rookie Egger'.

Safety, I don't know what Jeffersonian used, but I used a water based urethane & it all washed away within about the first year, so I would think oil based would be better perhaps. Regarding sanding, that much I do know, definitely a light sanding or even use fine steel wool, it'll come up like glasshappy in the hut

This stuff works great

Thanks for the information. That is the product I was thinking of using, is that oil base?

I used the Minwax "Early American" stain, code #230 as the color coat, then put on three coats of spar urethane. I sanded the top lightly between coats, but not the rest because, well, I'm lazy :P

Yes, that's the oil-based product.

Sounds like me but, I have wanted this for a long time and I will probably put on 6 coats and lightly sand the whole table. The winters are kind of tough here in Michigan and I live close to the water so it makes it kind of damp, also. Your table looks great!

Thought it was solvent, but it's not water based. I did 6 coats with sanding in between.

Then did the mates

Thanks, Safetyman, I think you're on the right track. I'm going to give mine a few more coats before winter, too.
