My New Egg(shell)

So my father called me tonight to say the neighbor across the street was getting rid of a BGE. I told him to grab it immediately.

Turns out to be an old (not sure how old) small. The neighbor is going to look for any parts but at the least I have an untracked shell.

Any ideas on how to refurbish?

I figure at the least I'll need:
[li]Firebox [/li]
[li]Fire Ring[/li]
[li]Gasket[/li]
[li]Daisy Wheel Top[/li]

I also need a new draft door as the present one is almost all rust. Any ideas on that? It looks like it's an older style with only 2 screws.

I'll get cooking grates etc. from Eggcessories.com.

Here's some pics of the poor old egg.

  • Just from looking at it Id say its about the same as mine 11 years, I might be wrong though but it looks the same.. All the size parameters should it be that age are the same when doing a restore.

I just did mine, Firebox, Ring, Grate, Wheel, Temp, Gasket (which Ive already melted in 4 weeks, Hinge bands replaced for new spring loaded, Door Slide, anything that could be replaced I went ahead and replaced...

  • Just did mine yesterday! I have an 8 year old small egg that has been stashed in a storage shed for the last year and a half. Four years ago or so I upgraded to the vented cap, but the bands were shot, the wood handle had long since split and disappeared and the termometer did not work. Dropped into the BGE store yesterday, picked up a new gasket, band set w/ spring hinge, thermomoter and a small nest. After a little rinsing and scrubbing, it took me about an hour and a half to get it looking like new. After 8 years of fooling with the original band / dome lock, the spring hinged band is so sweet! I will be installing the gasket this evening, and should be ready for cooking on Thursday.
