I BOUGHT ONE !!

Thanks to all for your responses on Oct 24 to my message, I bought a large BGE this morning! I've spent the day reading and testing and tomorrow I'll cook.[p]Regarding testing I was very surprised at how long one batch of charcoal lasted. I dumped one full cylinder of lit coals from a Weber charcoal bin (the one you lite with paper beneath). With both vents open the BGE got to 700 degress plus in 3 minutes after dumping coals in.[p]I shut the vents down until it dropped to 375 and from there I just tried to control it for as long as possible - mainly bottom vent open 1/2" and top daisey wheel 1/4".[p]Temps stayed in the 375 range for 3 hours and 15 minutes before I could no longer maintain temp. After 5 hours temp was still at 225 at the outside thermometer and 245 on two Taylor oven thermometers inside on the grates.[p]I don't know if the above is good or not but it was my first attempt at checking out the new BGE.[p]Thanks to all.[p]

  • Doug Balbierer,
Welcome! Of course, you should have been cooking some food while you were testing, but I guess we'll overlook it just this once. :-) Making charcoal last is not a problem. When I did my first boston butt, I probably only used 1/2 of the charcoal in cooking for 23 hours. So, get cooking![p]TNW

    Doug Balbierer,
I agree with TNW and you shoulda been cooking food, not thermometers. But if you wanted to test it without food, guess that's ok. I had to test mine with food.
What's the first meal going to be?
    Happy cooking!

Doug Balbierer,[p]Don't read the manual too much or it will load you up with bad information. The recipes are not all good either. The best info can be found here - just ask. Don't try using newspaper to start a fire or you will be unhappy, ribs take longer than 45 min and you need more lump than a handful or two.[p]Have fun![p]Tim
