However you want to leave some space between the outside of the egg and the edge of the table. 1/2" minimum.
So it's closer to 17.7" -

Just in case you have not thought of it, I would suggest the hole be level with the widest part of the egg.

Actually up want a wee bit lower or you won't have anything to hold on to when you drop the egg in.
If you keep the table below the hinges you don't need to accommodate for the hinge assembly. -
at this rate it may be easier to buy a new one where you are goinghappy in the hut

Thanks for catching that. I just went out and looked at my egg and table. It is not good to always go from memory when a short walk will let you eyeball it.
