The Modular BGE. Thoughts?
Options
I've loved the BGE in Large for quite a while, and would like to go bigger...MUCH, MUCH BIGGER. So, my question is...
Could, would, should Big Green Egg consider making a modular version?
The idea, essentially would be an XL or Large BGE sliced vertically down the middle to function as right and left sides of the BGE with multiple inserts available to extent the width of the BGE. Of course, the dome, hinge, spring bands, etc would all have to be modified extensively.
I know the solution for most of you is just to buy a second, third, fifth, twelfth BGE, but I was wondering if a modular BGE is something that anyone's considered.
Good/doable idea?

I think it may have been done. It's called an outdoor brick oven! :P I like the way you think though.

I can see the gears turning in Tjv and Thirdeye's head now :woohoo: :S

I've also thought the same thing but a little different. It would be something similar to what Weber did to their grills for the Weber restaurant. Think about a 5' diameter BGE cooking away with 30 butts on it and 20 racks of ribs above that. Dreams.......

Golly, for a guy who was just about to use a hand grenade to unfreeze his gasket, then wanted to modify the firebox orientation, and now this . . . why don't you just go into the business and design one that satisfies you . . .
Or buy a Primo - they make a wide cooker. -
We have a hard enough time with gaskets now.
Just cook something already!!
Just so you know this design has been around and working for 800+ YEARS.. -
but you'd need a crane to lift the lid :ermm:happy in the hut

Already been done, call the Primo Grill.

Naked Whiz (I think) has a page about cold smoking cheese. the approach is to make a smaller fire ring out of a coffee can with the top and bottom cut out. I think something like that would be useful (especially on the XL) for occasions where you want direct high heat for a short cook (grilling a few burgers for a quick supper).
