Just finishing my first cook. The turkey looks great. While shutting down my egg, I noticed that the bottom mesh grate doesn't close all the way, it stays open about 1/2 inch. The instructions say to completely close the bottom grate. Is it normal to stay slightly open?

That is not normal, it should shut all the way, if it stays open your lump will continue to burn, & at a 1/2 inch, it'll be hard to maintain smoking temperatures

I agree with Zippy. There is somethting blocking the vent. Pull, push, adjust the vent till it's completely closed.
  • This falls under the category of a newbie not knowing what he's doing. I was attempting to shut the grate by sliding the metal piece behind the grate, not in front of it. It works much better now. Thanks.
