    mike,
Rain won't hurt your egg at all. We have both of ours uncovered, and they still look the as good as when we got them.[p]~nikki

  • mike, matter of choice, but I use a cover for sake of protecting my table, not so much the BGE itself.

mike,[p]The only problem I have with not covering is that the felt gasket seems to wick moisture into the egg if rained on. I have also noticed that when I was setting the egg directly on a stepping stone, water seemed to wick into the unglazed bottom of the egg as well. Considering that, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep the metal parts treated with some kind of oil. The glazed exterior of the egg shouldn't be harmed by the elements unless it is hailing.[p]Ashley

    mike,
I don't cover mine. The only problem I have ever had was after a good old Iowa snow storm and the gaskets were frozen. I built a fire from newspaper in the bottom draft door and in few minutes it was going and the gasket was thawed. Most people use covers to protect against bird droppings and to keep their tables looking nice (Be careful of strong winds blowing the cover off the BGE)

  • mike,
The only uncovered problem I noticed was that the temp guage fills up with water if it ever rains.... I cover mine more for the table

mike,[p]I have to disagree with all the responses found in this thread. I've had Eggs of all makes and sizes for over 15 years. Over time rain, snow and sun will rust and weather all hardware components. Regardless, of the materials. Do yourself and protect your investment. Afterall I've seen prices go from $139 to well over $600.[p]
  • mike,
My neighbor's large BGE was left uncovered and the hinges rusted and broke off. Fortunately when the lid came off it fell into the grass and was not damaged. Even a cheap smoker cover is better than nothing.
Be sure to also burn it off (high temp) occasionally to keep mold from forming on the inside.
