I am up in New Hampshire for work and have encountered issues which have given me some spare time.

I am in the Manchester area and am looking for things to do.

Yesterday, I drove over to Maine and ate some lobster.

Anything else I can do?

Greg

  • Welcome to New England.

Another spot to visit might be Portsmouth NH. It's a pretty town right on the water, and has some decent restaurants, and a nice downtown to walk around.

Depending on how much time you have to kill and how far you're willing to drive, there are also some nice areas along Boston's north shore. Salem, MA is fun if you've never been. Some nice areas to walk around, some historic stuff on the waterfront, and the witch trials too. Also, the Peabody-Essex museum there is supposed to be great, though I haven't had a chance to go yet. Another nice town for walking, shopping and food is Newburyport, MA.

You're also less than 1.5 hours from Boston - if you really have time to kill, that's probably your best bet.

Some of our compatriots on the North Shore may have other suggestions for you too...

    Have fun.

Salisbury State beach is a very nice beach in southern NH.
Tarrinton(SP) Tank the Home of the first New England Eggfest is in Brentwood NH.
  • I would say drive to Montreal, but it's probably too far. :(
  • Thanks for the info.

Portsmouth definitely did look cool from the bridge crossing over from Maine. I might need to check it out.

I have been to Boston before but might need to look at some of the sites that I have yet to see.

  • What is Tarrinton (SP) Tank?

    Greg
  • Yeah, I am guessing that Montreal must be about 5 hours or so.

Also, I did not bring my passport.

if your willing to drive and like scenery its hard to beat the franconia notch area and some nice veiws off the kangamangus. you can drive up mt washington or take the cog railway but plan a sunny day, washington is usually in the clouds and fog.

ditto that. could stay a bit closer south and drive around the lakes region, too.

if you have kids, take them to Canobie Lake Park in Salem, NH. ...the wooden coaster dates from the 20s and is a perennial favorite of the wooden-coaster-aficionados.

you can also (as you found out by going to Maine) hit the seacoast in an hour's time. Portsmouth NH is a nice town to hit for an afternoon and decent dinner somewhere.

Boston is maybe an hour and twenty minutes away from Manchester.

and you could always visit fishlessman and see his massive Yankee candle collection.

Ogunquit, Me is close by and a quaint place to visit.
  • You're probably on the road already, but if not, here's more food for thought. Portsmouth, suggested by others, is a neat town. I'm particularly fond of the Portsmouth Brewery. I even eat there. You could also drive north on 93 and take a right on the Kankamangus Highway (in Lincoln). It's a very pretty winding road through the White Mountains with many places to stop for short or long hikes. The highway ends at route 16 in Conway. If you head south, you'll eventually end up in...Portsmouth. If you don't turn right in Lincoln, you will go through Franconia Notch, suggested by fishlessman. One last thought. There is a restaurant in Mason that serves ribs for breakfast, Parker's. It's about 30 minutes west of Manchester. Have fun!

  • Head to Bedford for KC's Ribshack if you are looking for some BBQ. Alos, A drive up to Plymouth or the lakes, just up 93, exit 25 or exit 20 is nice.

Boston is only 45 minutes on off peak times....Portsmouth is ony 45 also.
