I have heard of people who have whacked out their pens by leaving them in the rain, but I have yet to ever hear someone say it just quit working so I sent it in blah blah blah - so I wonder where these refurbished units come from. With as many eggers here surely some one had one go bad. Then that raises the next question - does Thermapen repair their units and if so for what charge?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time!

On my TPen a couple of the segments in the digit display went wacky for a while although the temp was otherwise correct. It occurred, of course, shortly after the warranty expired and was not related to mistreatment although it may have been caused by cold weather (that is, using it outside in the winter) since it later cleared up. I considered having it repaired but my procrastination made it unnecessary. I seem to recall some info on their website regarding repairs and costs.

That is how I got my Thermapen, as well.
I do not have any problems with it.

the only color they had was yellow, but i haven't figured out the importance of them (unless using them for different meats on the same grill to avoid cross contamination, if this would be an issue).

It seems the longer time passes the higher the refirb prices get.
I recall Novemberish last year the price for a refirb was $48 + ship. There was a price change due to the value of the dollar falling against he pound sterling.
Thermopens are made in England.
I haven't looked lately but as I recall Fred's Music & Guitar had them for $78 and I am not sure what mollyshard was selling them for. Jeese also bought some for a fest last year, but he is not posting on the forum much lately.

greetings,
you stated last week that a new TP was $89 and now a refurb is $70.
is the 6 months less warranty worth the $18 ? $3 per month or .10 per day
i have never been a big believer in "refurbed" anything personally.
not trying to start a war just curious. -

the $70 is actually $68 and includes shipping. the actual thermapen was like $63. the $89 doesn't include shipping. with shipping, i'd guess it would be about $95. now we are talking $25, over 1/4 of the cost of the thermapen for an extra six months.
i'll never leave mine out in the rain and it doesn't get cold down here but a couple days a year.
i too haven't been a big believer in refurb stuff, but i figure a thermapen isn't a tv or a refrigerator or a dvd player, which i would figure would have more stuff that could go wrong.
what the hey, if it goes out after six months, lesson learned. but i don't suspect i'll have that problem.

i got your point! no worries. it's still just pennies a day. -
Just to put in my 2 cents, both my brother and I bourght refurbished thermapens, and they've perfomed well. Only thing with mine is occassionally the temp reads with a decimal point between the 1st and 2nd number . . . Been that way since I got it.

With all the thermopens folks have on the forum, I think I read of now 3 problems.
The decmil point
droped in water - dried out and worked.
display problems, I believe this was a refirb and was replaced with I think a new unit.
Oh, yes, someone's battery finally went out.
Just a thuoght, for you folks that have had your pens for a while check the battery for possible leakage. It would be sad to loose a therompen over something like that.
