O.T. A few beers that I've thankfully not drunk

With deference to deepsouth who lists a nice selection of beers a few threads below, here is my beer can collection which was accumulated in the late 60's and early 70's. Amazingly I found these in my parent's crawl space when I was dis-assembling the family home a year ago. I'm amazed at how many breweries that existed forty years ago. Note that the Lite beer was brewed by Meister Brau, not Miller. I also like the Old Frothingslosh ("the pale stale ale with the foam on the bottom"). I have to admit I did drink one of the beers in this collection, the Giant Foods Premium Beer. My cousins in Washington DC gave it to me when I was 18 and it was about the worst beer I ever tasted. :pinch:

The Shlitz can brings back memories from years past. Rheingold, Shaffer & Ballantine were also very popular in New York and they all sponsered many of the MLB games on radio & TV. I can still recall all the catchy jingles in their ads!

That's funny how twice in one week that Olde Frothingslosh ("the pale stale ale with the foam on the bottom") got mentioned on this board! Here's my 40th anniversary can.

  • love the collection, especially the giant premium ...drank my fair share of that during desparate college days at american university in the 70s. ...

but a few years ago i was helping my cousins in mt. ranier maryland clean out the basement of the home they had lived in for 70 years with attached grocery store that had been in continuous operation for the same amount of time and came across the following, an unopened six pack of the famous billy beer. ..had to keep it. ... every now and then i check ebay to see what they are selling for ... and its not much. . . oh well ..it was bad then, and i'm guessing it never will amount to much. ..LOL

You need to bring that to Atlanta, it will only add to the stories that will be told.

You may even find a buyer.

I checked them on Ebay the other day and they were getting about the retail cost of a six pack today. -RP

They all look familiar. (Of course beer is a big hobby of mine;-) Except for one. Giant Food Premium Beer?? Never seen a grocery store brand beer like that, and I grew up in Giant Food land. I guess it's 1) before my time 2) wasn't paying attention or 3) I thought it was baked beans!

    Cool shots.

 I missed the earlier post. My can is a three piece steel can which probably makes it one of the earliest in production. Here's the text - I don't know if it's changed any with your can:

Fatima Yechburgh winner of the 1969 Miss Olde Frothingslosh contest was chosen on the basis of beauty, talent, poise...and quantity. She is the woman who best symbolizes Olde Frothingslosh, the pale stale ale with the foam on the bottom. Now she's the girl all others look down on.

Background - she's from a small town outside Pittsburgh. It's considerably smaller since she left.

Statistics - this you wouldn't believe

    Occupation - Trapeze artist

Education - studying arc welding at night

Hobbies - arm wrestling, sky diving, soap carving, ballet, and reading. She reads comic books, race forms, cereal boxes, and other good stuff. Miss Frothingslosh's formula for success: "Think Big"

I would guess I drank this crap around 1974. As I recall this was at the advent of generic brands. The early offerings of generic foods were all in plain white boxes, and this was the first example that I ever saw of a store brand beer. Trust me, you didn't miss anything by not drinking this stuff.

Thank god I was only 14. It looks like it must be ungood. Question is, how could anyone decide to put a lousy beer in a butt ugly can? Would be one thing if the beer was actually good. Guess that's why it was nowhere to be found in 1978, when I was "legal".

Cold ones toya! I'm sippin on a cold Yeungling rot now.

  • its cause you grew up in maryland where it was illegal to sell beer in grocery stores. .. you could only buy that giant beer in giants in virginia where you could buy beer and wine everywhere but booze only in the state ABC stores. .. don't worry, you didn't miss anything .. ..
  • i remember getting that stuff at the brickskeller on 24th street in washington dc. ...here's my funny story. ..1975 at THE american university in washington dc...my best friend and i go to the brickskeller where they have like 200 different beers from all over the world. . .we drink as many different ones as we possiblly can and still make it back up mass ave to our dorm with all of our empty cams to start our 'collection'. . .next day we go to class. ..now this is in the day when we still have maid service in the dorms ... .so our maid, thinking we had just had another of our typical parties, threw out the product of all that hard work while we were in class the next day nursing hangovers. .. oh well, never did that again!!! ...

I'm looking for the Buckhorn and the Light variety. As a former Grocer. Very, very sweet collection. They also had, the Generic. White can, black letters that said Beer.
