Melted the top to the bottom?

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
In an effort to clean our Big Green Egg, by burning left over charcoal at high temperature for a period of time, I think that we've melted the top to the bottm because we can't get it open! Has anyone else done this? What can we do to get it open? What will we need to do to fix the BGE, which is the world's best grill!

  • Jessica Smith,
Hey, Jessica. Yes this has happened before.
Try to get a flat head screw driver between the top and bottom and turn the screw driver from side to side. this should open the seal. After that you will need to get a new gaskit kit for your egg. If your local dealer does not have any just call me in the Atlanta store 404-320-3202 ask for john and i will send you what you need.

Jessica Smith,[p]Try to figure out what section is stuck. Most likely it won't be all the way around. Normally it is where grease or food was sitting on the gasket material before the cook. Then get the thinest knife you have, a filet knife is good or a bread knife. Insert it near the stuck spot and saw your way through the stuck area of gasket. Many have done this with no ill effects on the gasket, you want to cut it in the middle if possible. It's like slicing a slice of bread lenghtwise. Good luck.[p]Tim

    Jessica Smith,
I've had good luck with a putty knife. Slip (push) it between the upper and lower felt wherever you can and then slide it around the egg until opens. When I did that with mine, didn't do any harm to the felt. Good luck.
