Well I thought I had read all there is to read about flashbacks on TNW's website, watched the video, and figured I would go through life without one of my own. But yesterday, just 2 weeks after purchasing the egg, I had my first. I had stabalized my egg at 350 for a few minutes and was ready to put in my spatchcocked chicken. The bottom vent was open about a half inch, and the same for the daisy wheel, so it didn't occur to me that any sudden rush of oxygen would do anything, since I had never cut off the oxygen source. But sure enough I opened the lid, watched in awe as the fire jumped at me and my bare hands and accidentally dropped the lid down (I have an autolock and had not gotten it into locked position. Fortunately nothing happened to the egg (dome, bands, bottom all appear to be fine), and I then put on some gloves and opened the lid more slowly to put in the chicken. No more flashbacks, and the chicken was incredible, but it was quite a scary experience.
As a side note, if I had the spring assist band, and a flashback scared me into letting go of the lid, would the lid just stay opened at the position it was in when I let go? If so, it seems like a good feature to ensure the safety of the egg from accidental lid drops and broken domes that could result from them.[p]Aron

Aron,
No, the lid will not stay at the position it was at with a spring assisted hinge. Would be a good feature though.[p]~nikki

Aron,
One of the best investments I've made wes the purchase of a pair of welders gloves. $8.00, that's right, eight dollars at the local welding supply shop. The gauntlet of the gloves come almost to my elbows now all I have to worry about is the sudden loss of belly hair when I don't have a shirt on. Oh well, if it isn't one thing it's another . . .

Sundown,
I own a good pair of welders gloves (seemed I overpaid--12 dollars). Why I chose not to wear them at that time, I have no idea. Guess anytime I'm opening the egg, I should make sure to have them on.

Aron,[p]Even with the spring assist hinge, you must open the egg all the way for it to catch.
