Has anyone ever wrapped a butt in foil at any point during a smoke?

I tried foil wrapping a few times to speed up the cook. It did work, with the butts finishing in 5 hours after 2.5 in the foil. However, the results from my attempts were both greasier and somewhat less tender than butts just done slow.

5 hours, that is incredibly fast. I have 15 lbs tied together & expect it to take close to 20 hours (in hour 10 now). This always works beautifully but the bark is dry, this is what I am trying to avoid - any suggestions?

If I understand you correctly, you're smoking them as if they were one big roast. If your egg's big enough, don't let them touch each other while smoking, and they should be finished much faster, and hense better bark.

I made an awesome butt by unwrapped indirect at 275 for 4 hours, then double foiled for another 4 hours.

    After 4 hours (unwrapped)

Here it is after 4 hours of foiling

    The bone came out clean.

    The final product.

8 hours total, how much did that butt weigh at the start?
