Trex table

Used this website and built large table for egg. Used Trex or similar for the top (weather proof as suggested by Lowes employee; treated wood for rest of table carcass). Now I have concerns that the Trex or similar will melt when cooking due to the Trex being mostly plastic. Again, only the top is made of Trex.
Has anyone used Trex in this type of capacity before?

Thanks.

if you have clearance around the egg as you would/should for wood, then you'll be fine.

...now, for using pressure treated wood for the rest. 50 lashes with a rib eye!

I looked at the MSDS sheet for TREX. They don't test it for minimum flammability ignition temperature, they only test it for "flame spread" which doesn't help you. They do list a melting point of only 230 degrees F which is way too low to have in close proximity to the egg based on my research. If you decide to stick with the TREX then make sure to keep at least 1" gap between it and the egg, and plenty of ventilation under and around the table on all sides. You might also want to refrain from really high temp cooks or moderately hot cooks for long duration.

If it were me I would replace the top, or at least only use the egg when I was staying with it at all times to monitor. It just isn't worth the chance of a fire.
  • Don't know about Trex but I have had several plastic buckets melt when I forgot and left them on the bottom shelf near an egg.
