I just learned that cypress has a natural oil preservative called cypressene. So, is it necessary to put on a wood preservative or wood finish on the BGE cypress table?

Yes! I helped my buddie build his 4000+ sq.ft. log cabin. It is naturally resistant to rot, but if you don't treat it, it will change color and eventually hold mold & mildew on it's outside. Cypress is beautiful when stained. HTH.
  • Cypress is very resistant to rot. Someone I know has a shed that was built before I was born, and I don't remember it ever having any paint on it. It is not pretty, but it has no rot. Something happens around the 70 year mark that makes cypress rot resistant, before that time it is the same as most other woods. Not all, but most cypress used today is young cypress.

I have 3 coats of spar urethane on my cypress table for the FL elements and it looks great.
  • I would put an exterior grade product to provide protection. My preference is marine varnish - 3 coats should do it.

some find that old grey look with the green mixed in to be perfect. my teak rocker sits out year round, the only damage i see is the paper wasps like to scrape on it. i think cypress does the same thing. my boat has a fair amount of mahogany and teak that also weathers nice without a finish, had a couple coats of spar on it when i got it but ive been consistantly scraping it off with a pen knife during slow fishing times. once you put the varnish on there is upkeep, some of us cannot live with that.
