Phishing

There's a thread going on under your sticky about e-mail phishing. I imagine that forum members might be reluctant to respond to legitimate through-the-forum e-mails. If phishing is going on, your warning is a good thing, but it might be a good idea to give more information on how to tell phishing expedition messages from legitimate ones. Thanks.

as with any email, i wouldn't respond unless i knew (of) the sender, and unless the email had a little context. someone emailing out of the blue to inquire about the egg, with a handle i've never seen on the forum, would go to the trash.

...but if i saw it came from Celtic Wolf, and was regarding a post i made about one thing or another, i'd know it was legit, and would feel comfortable responding. actually, if it were from Celtic Wolf, i'd probably send it to the trash anyway, but you get my point ;)

if you don't recognize the name, and the subject is random or out-of-context, ignore it.

...or you might want to send it to WMK, actually.

    fishlessman,

A "guest" can post as anything they like, as long as it is not an existing handle (that produces an error). But a guest post is not linked to a profile (i.e. the "handle" is not green).

The only way to be "green" when you post, i.e. linked to a profile, is to be logged in under that username.

can guests be locked out from emailing thru the forum, that might stop some unwanted stuff.

    fishlessman,

Guests cannot view profiles; so, they cannot send email through the forum. The email is question came from a new member. We are not sure it was phishing, but it could have been. Apparently not too many were received from this individual; so, it may be a false alarm.
