If you have a vice go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy 2 flat bars (a piece of steel about 1/8" X 3/4" X 3' long) and bend them so you have it hanging from the fire ring, drop down to the height you wish, and go across to the other side, up and then a bend to hook on the fire ring. Do 2 like that and then drill a hole where there cross and then bolt them together, some would recommend stainless, not galvanized bolts.

Not sure if they have what you need. Give them a call I'm sure they will help.

Great idea Semolina. I hadn't considered that but might try it soon. Does the steel get red hot or bend while in use, or rust over time?

Just a note, the Galvanized tip is not just a suggestion. Galvanized metal will off-gas toxic chemicals under high heat. I just removed the fire ring and rested the grate on the edges of the egg. Be careful it's hot down there.

Add more charcoal??

take out the fire ring and use your original large grid.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

at the temps where galvy would be dangerous, stainless would also be dangerous. there's no realdanger using stainless OR galvy in the egg, FWIW.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

Where the cooking grid will fit on the firebox is a little narrower than where the grid sits on the fire ring. I forget who, but someone removed their fire ring and put the food grid on the firebox (the original BGE grid if I remember correctly) and with expansion when hot it cracked their egg.

I did not notice if it got red hot, it has not bent, and since it is unpainted steel it would rust simply by staying outside. After I use it I wipe it down with cooking oil, so far so good. I used a similar method with flat bar to make a raised grid setup, that one never rusts. It always has a black coating like the inside of your egg gets after a cook. Every so often I have to knock a little crud off.

mine fits. weird.
only maybe 5 years old. hmmmmmmed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
P.S. I bought a knockoff grid from Academy that is about an inch or so smaller that the BGE original, and it is the perfect size for putting on the firebox.

2" fire ring from the Mothership???

Who knows what is at work here. Maybe that guy had an egg that was slightly narrower at that height than normal, or had a grid that had a slightly larger diameter, OR, maybe, just maybe, the laws of physics cease to exist inside Stike's grill.

or maybe it has been so long that i tried it, it really DOESN'T fit and i just think it does. i'll check later. haven't had the fire ring out in a whileed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

I removed my firering on my XL and went straight on the firebox. I used my half moon CI and I cracked my base as the CI expanded.
