Report: Kingsford Lump

Due to a variety of unfortunate circumstances I ran out of lump and was left with picking some of the notorious crackle and pop  I have had the same issues that many of you have had in the past and was very leery, but I knew that they were supposed to have changed it and figured that it would be better than eating out :) Lo and behold, no issues! None! I lit it in a chimney starter and no fireworks and it cooked like a champ. This was only for grilling so I have no idea how it will work for longer cooks but it is good to know that this is available. Out here in Co., lump gets a bit scarce in the winter, but the Kingsford stuff is almost always available at the grocery store.

    Mike,
Thanks for the offer, but I am ok for now ('course you might be hearing from me come september :) ). I can still get RO and Cowboy so all is good for the moment and I plan to stock up for the off season.

BTW, I ran across some Abita beer the other day and couldn't help but think of you and your help when I first got my egg and am still on the lookout to pass it along :)...beer wasn't too shabby either :woohoo:

As it so happens, I have someone high within the Kingsford organization in my home right now. We discussed this at length. Kingsford is now using 100% domestic lump now...their old stuff was Argentinian.

Jeffersonian, you can pass on that if Kingsford ever needs some test marketers I'm sure they can find some willing souls here. I've got a half bag that they can have back if they want it (don't know the date but was purchased in the last 60 days). In my Webber/bricket days Kingsford was the only thing I would buy so was very disappointed in their lump. Looks like the new stuff was checked out by 'TNW' and was improved but still needs more. I sure will pass that on...I've got him in my clutches one more day (he's been eating food cooked on Royal Oak the whole time :side: ).

Check the origin of your lump...made in America is the new stuff. I think they started putting that into the distribution chain around the beginning of the year, so the age would depend on your distributor and retailer.

From my experience there was absolutely nothing wrong with the lump for grilling (and maybe not for lo and slo either, I just haven't tried it for that purpose yet). It got up to temp with no sparking or popping and worked just like any other decent lump out there in my opinion

I have no stake in this other than convienence of finding lump out here during the "off" season.
