I have inherited an original clay egg close to 30 years old. Are there still parts available? Did they just come in one size then? What size would that translate into today? I really want to fix this baby up and start using it. IT has been outside all this time and hasn't been used in a decade. It's a mess. Can it be repainted? What kind of paint would I use?

> I have inherited an original clay egg close to 30 years old.
Congratulations.
> Are there still parts available?
Technically, no. But new parts come pretty close. E.g. your large (If that is what it is) has a diameter about an inch larger than the current large BGE.
When you get ready to start replacing parts, call Mothership in Atlanta and tell them the diameter of your base. They will know what current size will fit.
> Did they just come in one size then?
No. Mini, Small, Medium, and Large. No XL.

What size would what translate into today?

Yes.

Stove paint. Go to any store that sells free standing fireplaces, something akin to the old Ben Franklin stoves, and buy a couple cans of spray paint from them.
When you get it fixed up, remember that those old Eggs are not the new ceramic ones. They were never supposed to be taken above about 350*F. If you do take it higher, you risk cracking the shell. -
Yes they certainly do and also eat out the firebox. Voice of experience.
To clean take out the firering and the firebox and vacuum the inside. Check the bottom vent since they get stuck with ashe. If you can't move it you may have to order a new one and also the adjustable cap.
start a low fire in it to see how she smokes. Also drill a 1/8th inch hole in the dome about 5" down from the top cap for a thermometer.
Check Naked Whizz link. He has a manual you can download. -
Can you post some pics?
Would love to see and it owuld be the best to get advice.

Here is what I inherited. I am told it is an original Big Green Egg but it has a window on it. Did BGE come that way for a while?

sorry guess I didn't get the pictures uploaded right.

Rick,
That is absolutely amazing. I never realized that they dated back that far.
Thanks for sharing the pics.
I hope you can restore it. I might call the mothership to see what the best method might be.
Please keep us posted.

It looks like one of the original Kamados that Richard Johnson was making back in the 60s. The color is similar to mine which is 38 years old. Never had a window though. I painted mine green after repairs on the base.

By Mothership do you mean the company that makes BGE?
-
Yes.

I had good results painting my egg. Details with pics shown here.
