Going to install Cotronics gasket--any advice?

My Small Egg has been without a gasket for several years, and I thought no problem. I made a pork butt the other night (Holy Guru!) and for the first time noticed dense clouds of smoke coming out under the lid. So I've decided to finally install the Cotronics tape (up to 1100º) and Permatex copper silicone gasket adhesive I got last year.
How do I get off the bits of crud on the rims? Goof Off? Putty knife? Acetone? I have a Mapp torch. I'm not going to remove the lid because I'm just a weak little old lady and might drop it. PLEASE HELP WITH A PLAN OF ACTION! Then I'll know what to do when the Large needs it.
Thanks, all you wonderful people out there.

I used a putty knife and wire brush.

In my opinion, Cotonics is a very wise choice, I have installed 1500 deg. 1" x 1/8" on three large eggs. I think it is advisable for you to have someone help you remove the dome, but not necessary. Remove the remnants of the old gasket/gunk with acetone and a sharp putty knife, doing about 6" at a time. Make sure you cover/protect the bowl of your Egg throughout the cleaning procedure.
If I can be of further help:

I think the previous posts have good advice.
The one thing I will add is to turn the top upside down and let it rest inside the bottom half to remove old pieces of gasket and install the new one.
It will take 6' per gasket or 12 for top and bottom.
Large egg assumed.
I applied the silicone in a 'snake' track type of wave and then just laid the Cotronics material gently on it pressing down as I felt it was in place correctly. Take it slow and don't stretch the material. It was pretty easy.
Still works great after 3+ years on my large and small.
