Scrunched Fire Box -- Tips

My firebox started cracking in numerous places about six+ months ago, and this past week it just completely fell apart. After some encouragement, I decided to attempt to JB Weld it.

But as I was playing, I couldn't figure out how to glue it, without the upper pieces falling "out." :(

Solution -- ;)

> Piece of plywood for a work surface :)
> Cover the ply with baking/parchment paper. B)
> Assemble and glue the firebox upside down! :silly:
> Band together with flex strap/clamp :side:

After setting, remove the strap. The glue won't stick to the parchment paper. :cheer:

Voila!

Now -- I'll put it to good use tomorrow -- and report later on the [relative] success.

Wish me luck!

Thanks for the info. Mine has a hairline crack but isn't a problem so I will keep on cooking like it is until I can get it to my dealer.

    Yes, me Oirish brot'er! :silly:

I have taken it [in pieces] to my local dealer. I told him about the imminent collapse of the firebox six months ago -- and he forgot to order a replacement...
He says he might have one for me in as soon as six+ weeks... whenever the next shipment comes in. I have two major cooks within that time [the 12th and the 26th of July].

A dealer we all know in Omaha :):):) is coming to the rescue -- and is willing to lend me a used firebox next week. I think I'll give the JB Weld attempt the ole college try... and if it stays together for a while, I might make it well into replacement time.

I really don't want to bash the local guy. He's a nice fellow, just running a hardware store, with Eggs on the side. In contrast, our Omaha dealer has his head in the game... and is building a business based upon satisfied customers and striving to legitimately help people.

If the JB Weld works half as well as some of you-all say it will, it'll be good to go for a while until the replacement comes in.

I'm sorta pleased with myself -- with my fantastique exploration into the world of liquid steel -- and I'll let y'all know if'n it works!

Others have accomplished some spiffy solutions with JB Weld, patience -- followed by some great cooks!

    Best to All!

    Yes -- 'Tis!

And the dealer says he'll have a replacement when he gets his next delivery, which he expects in 6+ weeks.

I told him 6 months ago that it was severely cracked, but he didn't remember to order one.

    please let us know!!!!

i am worried about the extensive heat.. most of us (like yourself) know the fire box is the first to go. because of the heat it "holds"... it is the hottest thing in the egg because it holds something burning at a much higher temp than our dome is reading... so i am real interested to see how your "Band Aid" works and how long it holds up ;)

    happy eggin

Me too. Mine has been cracked on one side for about a month. Yesterday, I noticed another crack on the other side. Be interested to know how yours works too.

The manufacturer says that JB Weld is good to 600 F for short periods of time. So, you are probably OK for low and slow if you light in the middle, but pushing it for high heat stuff. Good luck

Here is a much better product for repairing broken parts of the EGG than JB Weld:

    2300°F Resbond™ 907GF Adhesive & Sealant by ‘Cotronics’.
This moist, creamy putty is easily applied from standard caulking cartridges for use from -300°F to 2300°F.
Just apply to steel, stainless, iron, most metals, ceramics, ceramic cloth, tapes, gaskets, tadpole gaskets, etc.
Use for bonding, sealing and repairing exhaust systems, fire brick, gas turbines, brazing fixtures, equipment, stacks, etc. Ideal for use in any high temperature Assembly, Production, Repair or Maintenance Application. About $35 plus shipping.
(I have no affiliation with Cotronics, just use their products very successfully)

You can get a 4oz tube of Resbond HERE for $12.95, but their shipping isn't cheap.
