Yesterday I ordered a Big Green Egg, so now I have to join the Egg Cult. Is there a secret initiation ceremony?

It should be delivered in a couple of weeks -- I am waiting for some landscaping to be finished first. The landscapers are working v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y.

So what is a good (easy) first meal to cook? I was thinking of roasting a chicken.

  • Sorry, but we're not that formal; no initiation necessary. However, after you've mastered the tricks needed for your BGE to operate properly, we'll show you the secret handshake.

    Good eggin'

The Freemasons have nothing on this group. After you learn the Eggslang then you have to learn how to post a picture of your latest cook. Welcome!

i got my BGE for christmas and prior to that i could count on one hand how many times i "cooked out". i have yet to ruin anything i've cooked on the egg and ususally after the third time cooking and a bit of research, i've found it pretty easy to make a damn presentable meal fit for anyone. i've only cooked baby back ribs three times and the last two, i have been told by people that they were some of the best ribs they've had.

i think it's nearly impossible to mess up on the egg if you put even 50% effort into it.

    (my first post!)
  • Some here, myself included, might feel that "Flashback" (more properly referred to as "Backdraft") might be considered an initiation ceremony of sorts.

For your first few cooks (especially when loaded up with a lot of fresh lump (lots of VOC's)) I'd wear a light long sleeve t-shirt and use an oven glove on the hand you open the lid with... just in case. At least until you get experience "reading" the fire (even then I STILL where one). (you can roll up the sleeve on the non gloved hand).

    Welcome aboard.

No cooks over 400 degrees for the first 10 cooks. And yes, there is a secret handshake.... but...

Welcome to the cult. Experiment and try a lot of different things. You'll get the hang of it quickly and this forum is the greatest safety net there is. As for the initiation...you'll do something stupid in the first few weeks (ie, back draft, forget to open bottom damper, get it too hot on startup etc) and you'll be a card carrying cult member with all privle :) ges.
