.......had my first flashback.
Since most of my cooks are at low/med temps, I had become kind of complacent and not too worried about it. I had seen the TNW video, read on that site and this forum about it. Well last night when doing pizza at 550deg, I got the fireball. Right arm, shirt, face, etc. The smell of burning hair in the early evening...
Luckily this lesson learned was without injury.

Yes, my first was also with a pizza. Just a half second before my second and (so far) last, I thought "No, wait, you're going to get a..." FWOOMP
-
Been there a few times too! Very scary, but fortunately, like you, no injuries. 8 - )

I just check the Glossary and FWOOMP is not listed. I think you should add it as "the sound and Egg makes during a flashback." It's Perfect!!! Mark

Ron,
Definitely understand some of the complacency, I find myself doing the same.
I have had a couple of small ones but never did anything but remind me to burp.
Were you using the platesetter and the stone?
Your pizza did not take like burnt hair, did it?
Greg -
No the pizza was good.
Went the easy route and used the Boboli crusts this time.
I was using the plate setter legs down, ceramic BGE feet supporting the stone. -
They are fun, aren't they?
-
LOL, thats about what mine looked like.

for all of the "H O L Y S H ! T" aspect of the flashback, they are moslty not as injurious as you'd think. still dangerous, but luckily the worst thing that ever happened was my EYELASHES melted together. no kidding. they curled up like venus-frigging-flytraps and stike is standing there thinking he be blind.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

Good suggestion. I will.

Your listing has you as an "Expert Egger". If this was only your first flashback I'd say you are still a "Newbie".

Expert Eggers that don't post alot get a raw deal. Oh wait, I did it again!!! hehe
-
Wow, that is a bit strange.
I have seen my almost flashbacks with cooking with only the grate while cooking direct.

Funny thing is I got my first one (Owning LBGE for a year) just the other night. Chatting on the phone with a buddy, Egg getting up to temp. Looked at the gauge and it read just a bit over 400. Blah, blah, blah and I opened the dome like it was not lit and WHOOOOSH. NO MORE ARM HAIRS.! Thankfully, it was not a big flashback, but nonetheless.
-
yep, that backflash can be a ****!!!
-
Morrow Bay Rich. I don't consider myself an expert, nor do I desire to be deemed as one by you or anyone else. If you read my post you will see that most of my cooks are low/med heat which I am told wont generate the heat to cause a flashback.

Ron...I do the burp thing when cooking above 450. My daughter gave me a glove that comes close to my elbow, got it at Williams Sanoma. Saves the arm when you burp. Still had a close call when doing steak at 600. Flame almost got to my shirt. Started closing the bottom vent like I read some place and that reduces the flame. Glad u weren't injured.

Thanks Bob, hope you are doing well there on Lkae Martin. Have you jumped off Chimney Rock yet?
-
you can get flashbacks at 350/400.
in fact, i had a situation where i re-loaded an already hot fire (was doing paella, and ran out) with new lump. after adding the lump, it was not possible to open the lid without getting a flashback. actually, probably more of a flashover.
there was so much dust and fuel, that just opening the lid gave the thing an excuse to WHOOMP. i lifted the lid five times in a row, same thing. whoomp, whoomp, whoomp. each time.
just had to wait for the "fresh" lump to lose it's freshness.
if you have a large amount of fresh lump, even a low fire can cause flashbacks.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
Thanks for the advice stike, much appreciated.

Geeze...I'm glad you're ok. I'm glad you reminded me. I haven't thought about that in a while. I use the stoker alot, and I'm guessing that helps prevent it(as long as the fan is on).
