XL Dome troubles
Big Easy Egg
Posts: 191
I have a XL and have a dome that is smaller than the bottom by 3/8" from front to back. I have contacted the Mothership and they are on it but I was wondering if antone else had this problem. According to my birth certificate my egg was layed 3/07 and I hatched it in 11/07. Was there a design change? I have noticed some XL handles are much larger than mine.

I love the table you use. You get that from a restaurant supply shop? Stainless and everything...
I never thought to look there! -
Dang, I can't see the pic.

I resized his original pic:

Hey Jimmy, there was a design change. It looks like you have the new style(sping assist) hinges though.I don't know when they switched to the wide handle, but your hinges look new.I have the paperwork that came with my new bands.I'll send it to you.It may help you adjust your bands to center the dome up.

BTW,this is what the old style looks like.Notice the lower arm is straight instead of L-shaped.

Thanks Mike. Much better.

Big Easy I have a new XL as well and was noticing the same thing. I am frustrated that my dome doesn't come down straight, I have to pull it over to one side just to keep it even on each side.
I've made as many adjustments to the back as I can, and still no luck. Very frustrating when you spend a lot of $$ and you can't make it work right.
If anyone else has suggestions on what I should adjust let me know. The exact issue is the dome wants to land over on the right more than on the left.
I've tightened the bands and made sure they were up against the lip, but still no luck. -
I have more pictures of the top alignment but I can't seem to get them to post. My top comes down ok and it seals very good but the dome is actually smaller in diameter than the bottom. I will try again to get the pictures posted.

I see. I've never measured my dome size compared to the bottom. I just replaced the gasket Wednesday but haven't had a chance to cook on it again. Tonight I'll see if that helps. My old gasket burned up in less than a month, I assume this has something to do with poor alignment anyway.
I thought a week or two back someone posted a comment about the dome being smaller, but their post made it seem as if its normal. I dunno, hopefully you can learn something from the mothership.
Have a good one

I will keep you posted on the response I get from BGE. I think by the lid being smaller the inside edge of the gasket begins to heat up and then begins to burn.

Here is a picture of my xl at the handle. I had to keep pulling back on the dome to get the top and bottom band/spring assembly to align with each other. It's close to a 1/4 inch out.
Now I have a high and low felt ledge around the front of the egg. It's a little unsettling to look at. I do wonder what will happen when the low felt wears thin and it rains.....felt ledge sloping into the egg.

tjv,
Your picture is similar to how my egg looks. I wonder if this is how they were designed or some sort of defect?
Hopefully Big Easy Egg will hear something positive from BGE. -
I had a similar problem on a large purchased june '07. The dome was out of round, could tell by spinning the dome in the band and resetting. Got a new dome to fix it. Twww.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

Never thought of that but that seems to be the case.
-
That doesn't look right - couldn't have been designed that way. My MBGE went together with perfect alignment between dome and body all the way around. BGE has to make this right for you.
-
Looks like I need to call BGE then too!
-
I bet they will, this isn't bargain basement equipment.

...as I duck under the table to avoid the retribution
That is a Tennessee Egg, notice the severe underbite :-) -
Well said Gene! I never would have thought of that.
