Can I cook enough food in a large BGE?

Unknown
edited November -1 in EggHead Forum
I'm getting ready to invest in a ceramic smoker. There are three BGE dealers within 1 hour of my home so I can save on shipping. But I'm worried about whether I will be able to cook enough on it at a time. I usually have guest drop in when I cook. How much meat can I put on it using the raised grill as well as the regular one? I guess poundage isn't the thing, but physical dimensions. Also how does the plate holder work for indirect cooking (none of the dealers had one in stock)?[p]pastor_chuck

    pastor_chuck,
In my large Egg, I can get (one rack) 30 pounds of pork butt, or, 1 whole brisket, or 6 to 8 racks of ribs, or 4 dozen chicken wings. So unless you've got an unusually large appetite (as well as your guest), I think you can get more than enough food in a large.
Oh, and the plate setter is just the ticket for holding a drip pan for low and slow barbecue. Think "manna".

<p />pastor_chuck,[p]Here's a shot of the plate setter (inverted) and the raised grid in action. There is a drip pan on the plate setter to catch the fat. This is two 8 lb boston butts and a 14 pound brisket at the start of a 20 hour cook. So as you can see you can feed a lot of people with a large BGE. Have a great day.[p]Chuck <><

    Chuck,
Where did you find that raised grid/grille?

Sundown,[p]I got it at my BGE dealer. It is a BGE product so you shoud be able to buy or at least order one from your dealer. You might be able to order directly from BGE also.[p]Chuck <><

    Chuck,
I gor my grill extender as well from my BGE dealer, but it is different than yours. I like your's better. Can you find out what company makes them, so I can order one.
    Thanks!

  • Chuck,[p]Boy did I get hungry just looking at the picture of the butts and brisket. I'm heading down to Bloomington, IN today to look a little more closely (maybe buy).[p]Chuck

Hammer,[p]It is made by, or at least distributed by BGE. Thay make two different ones. One with a rigid top and one with a hinged top (the hinged one is pictured). I would think your dealer could order either one for you. Good luck.[p]Chuck <><
