Ash grates

I have a pot of baked beans and steak tips on and just went out to check the temp after shaking down the ashes about 20 minutes ago and the temp was dropping. I knew I was low on lump and did not want to run into town to get some, not all of us have our own private store houses yet with PALLETS of lump waiting for our every cook!
But I thought I would be fine. Well I check the fire and lots of lump left but my grate has about given up its job. under the poor grate was full solid with hot chunks. i have scraped them all out into a pot to sift when it all goes out, there is enough to bother believe me! But anyways, I had posted this question back when it had cracked about half way and there were some good suggestions for the replacement that was a little tougher than BGE replacement part. Of course I have not followed up on them when I should have or I would not be in this mess. :( could anyone kick in what it was. I thought I had saved it. also this is a very good reason why the little feet are important for that air space and not having wood under the egg. we have our large up on a big piece of granite slab sitting on some concrete blocks and then the egg is on its feet. it was HOT under there. very hot. I would not have wanted just wood under there. I have had one fire scare and am extra careful now. Julie

Lots of people have suggested using a floor drain grate which sounds ideal, until you try to find one.It seems most suppliers have gone to plastic.I gave up and had my dealer order the BGE model which works fine but took BBQ Galore forever to get.It cost $19.00 plus shipping. If I have to do it again I will go direct to the mothership and save a lot of time.
Good luck

depends on where you live I guess - I just go to a plumbing supply store and they have cast iron grates in numerous diameters - and they are cheaper than $19.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time!

Thanks, Guess I will head to the store tomorrow for lump and a new grate. I will try the drain before I order one. Julie

When you do the new ash grate, you ought to try incorporating (3) carriage bolts for legs to hold the grate about 1/4" off the ceramic. It increases airflow and seems to allow more ash through rather than piling up on top.
I believe it has improved ease of ignition and temperature control. It definitely has helped me stay ahead of ash buildup.
